COTE ST. LUC, QC -- Right-fielder
Jonathan Duforest of Kirkland, Que., stroked a walk-off single as the McGill University baseball team rallied for a dramatic 8-7 victory over Humber College to take the opener of a doubleheader at Gary Carter Field, Sunday.
The result extended McGill's win streak to three on the season and 10 straight dating back to last year.
Trailing 7-6 heading into their final at bats, McGill had runners on first and second after a one-out walk to catcher
James Mulvaney and another base on balls to pinch-hitter
Michael Gaudioso. Freshman
Milo Young then singled on a hard ground ball to centre, cashing in pinch-runner
Charles Winans from second base to knot the score at 7-7.
It capped a brilliant performance for Young, a 5-foot-10, 145-pound shortstop from Honolulu, who went 2-for-4 at the plate, with three runs batted in.
Senior
Dominic DeFelice then walked to load the bases, setting the stage for Duforest, a physical education senior, who singled to right on a 3-2 count, to cap the last-inning comeback.
McGill had jumped into an early 5-0 lead and was ahead 6-1 but Humber rebounded with six runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 7-6 lead. The Hawks rally was sparked by a two-run triple from
Stephen Nahrabecki, followed by an RBI groundout from
Dylan White, an RBI by
Sam Lebel, who was hit by a pitch, an RBI single by
Hunter Bisser and an RBI single by
Dennis Dei Banning, who went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Bobby Finnie was credited with the win in relief for McGill. He surrendered no hits or runs over one inning, but walked two and struck out a pair.
Zach Finkelstein started for McGill and lasted four innings. He allowed one run on three hits, walked four and struck out five.
Zach Salsburg-Frank and
Benji Kaiserman also entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the win in relief.
Braden Taylor started on the mound for the Hawks. He allowed nine hits and six runs (five earned) over 3.2 innings, walking three, hitting one batter and striking out two.
Riley Pollard took the loss in relief. He went 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and two runs while walking four and striking out three.
The home side, which outhit the visitors 12-8, received multiple-hit efforts from DeFelice, Young and
Chester Dixon.
McGill will conclude the doubleheader with a 1:30 p.m. start against the Toronto Varsity Blues.
