McGill baseball team takes Toronto, extends win streak to 11

COTE ST. LUC, QUE. -- Senior Jared Kersh of South Salem, Mass., hit a two-run single to cap a five-run rally in the fifth inning as the McGill University baseball team rebounded for a 6-4 victory over Toronto to sweep a doubleheader on Sunday at Gary Carter Field.

McGill, which also came from behind for an 8-7 win over Humber College in the first game of the twin-bill, improved to 4-0 on the season and extended their win streak to 11, dating back to last year.

Trailing 4-3, Kersh singled on the first pitch of his at bat, cashing in rookie Milo Young and senior Jonathan Duforest. Kersh, who went 2-for-3 then came around to score the insurance run when sophomore Michael Gaudioso reached base on an error by third baseman Stefan Popovic.

Toronto had taken a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Joe Woods, Graham Tebbit and Matt Myhal each collected RBIs.The home side narrowed the gap to 3-1 in the second but Toronto pushed the cushion back to three with a run in the fourth.

Freshman Nick Esposito collected the win in relief for McGill. The 5-foot-9, 155-pound righty went one inning, allowing only one hit and one hit batsman. Veteran Zach Salsburg-Frank of Oakland, Calif., and Pierre-Olivier Avoine of Val d'Or, Que., entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close it out, with Avoine, a first-year transfer from Galveston College, recorded the last three outs to earn his first career save for McGill.

Starter Mateos Kekatos took the loss for Toronto. He went five innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits, striking out three and walking one.

Cole Millinger started for McGill and surrendered four runs (none earned) on five hits over four innings. He struck out one, walked one and hit one batter.

Kersh and sophomore Charles Winans each managed multiple hits for McGill, which had an 8-7 edge over the Varsity Blues in that department. Winans went 2-for-3 at the plate, with an RBI and a run scored.

Michael Deluca led Toronto offensively with two hits in four at bats with a run scored.

McGill (4-0) will conclude their four-game home stand on Wednesday when they host Queen's in a 12 noon start.
