Thomas Mienkowski struck out eight batters as the McGill University baseball team extended their modest win streak to two with a 5-1 victory over the visiting Toronto Varsity Blues, Saturday, at Gary Carter Field.
McGill, which had an 8-7 edge in hits, took advantage of four Toronto errors. They tallied twice in the bottom of the third inning, added another in the fourth and two in the sixth before Toronto finally broke the goose-egg in the top of the seventh.
Mienkowski, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound right-hander from Toronto, threw 97 pitches over five innings for the win. The economics senior allowed no runs on five hits, walked four and hit one batter.
Southpaw
Bobby Finnie, a management junior from The Woodlands, Texas, threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen, giving up a run on two hits with one strikeout.
Starter
Dean Christidis took the loss for Toronto. He went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out two and walking one.
Right-fielder
Jonathan Duforest, a senior from Kirkland, Que., went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead McGill in hits, while sophomore
Michael Gaudioso was the offensive spark plug. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound catcher from Livingston, N.J., batted fifth in the order and went 1-for-1 at the plate, with a pair of walks and two runs scored.
Four McGill players were credited with one RBI apiece, namely
Domenic Defelice (1/4),
Jared Kersh (1/3),
Gabriel Parker (0/3) and
Milo Young (1/3).
Matt Myhal,
Lucas Yang, and
Michael Deluca each collected multiple hits for the Varsity Blues.
McGill is scheduled to play a doubleheader on Sunday at Gary Carter Field, with a 10 a.m. start against Humber College, followed by a 1 p.m. re-match with Toronto.
