Gritty Greene grounds Hawks in baseball matchup of defending collegiate champs

COTE ST. LUC, QUE.-- Starting pitcher Sam Greene of Philadelphia, Penn., allowed just two hits and struck out five as the McGill University baseball team cruised to a 7-2 victory over the visiting Humber College Hawks to open the season at Gary Carter Park, Friday.

It was the first game for McGill since last fall, when they cruised to a 34-9-3 record overall en route to capturing their fifth consecutive Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association crown. Unfortunately, the CCBA folded last month and McGill will play a 35-game schedule this season as an independent team, with no league affiliation.

Humber, which hails from Etobicoke, Ont., posted a stellar 17-3 record last season, en route to winning both, the Ontario Collegiate Athletic Association title and the National College Baseball Championship.

Green, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound right-hander, went six innings for the win. The management senior threw 96 pitches, allowed one earned run, walked three and hit three batsmen. He was relieved by Cole Millinger, a sophomore from West Windsor, N.J., who pitched the final inning. He faced the minimum, threw 10 pitches and struck out two.

McGill scored seven runs on four hits and made three errors, compared to Humber, which had two runs on two hits and made a pair of errors. The home side led 3-0 after the first inning and added two more in the fifth before Humber finally broke the goose-egg in the fourth inning, narrowing the gap to 5-1. They added another run in the top of the fifth, but McGill rallied with two more in the bottom of the inning.

Rookie third-baseman Pierre-Olivier Avoine -- batting seventh in the lineup -- led McGill offensively, going 1-for-2 at the plate with a pair of walks. The engineering freshman from Val d'Or, Que., had two runs batted in and scored one run.

The other hits for McGill were credited to Michael Gaudioso and Chester Dixon, both had doubles, and Jonathan Duforest.

Humber's two hits came off the bats of Liam Sutherland in the third inning and Jeff Siemms, who doubled to lead off the fifth inning. Both threats were snuffed out by an inning-ending double-play.

Humber starter Matt Stoddart took the loss. He lasted only four innings and conceded five runs (one earned) on three hits, four walks, hit one batter and collected a pair of strikeouts.

McGill (1-0) will host the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday (
Aug. 24) at 1:30 p.m. Then a doubleheader is scheduled for Sunday, against Humber (10 am) and Toronto (1 pm).

GAME NOTES: After the game, most of the McGill baseball squad was spotted enjoying a post-game meal at Alto restaurant on Parc Avenue. The longtime Montreal eatery, which dates back to 1987, held a free barbeque for all patrons, from 5 to 7 p.m., to celebrate the one-year anniversary of their return to business after an 18-month closure due to a devastating fire in December, 2016... McGill's 2019 roster features seven freshmen, 20 sophomores, four juniors and 10 seniors. The geographical breakdown includes 21 Americans, plus three players apiece from Quebec and Ontario, two from British Columbia, one from France and one from China.
