MONTREAL --
Alexis Marceau, a short-track speedskater who studies at McGill University, has won a $4,000 academic excellence bursary. The 20-year-old mechanical engineering freshman from Rivière du Loup, Que., was among 33 Banque Nationale bursary recipients recently awarded a combined total of $126,000, under the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence program.
Between 2019 to 2023, the Banque Nationale has committed to award $1 million to student-athletes in Quebec, ranging from 13 to 26 years of age.
"Our partnership (with the Foundation), which dates back more than a quarter-century, enables us to foster academic and athletic excellence in Quebec's top student-athletes," said
Louis Vachon, president and chief executive officer of the Banque Nationale, in a news release. "We are proud to recognize the talent, discipline, and determination of the recipients."
Eight of the 33 bursaries were issued to university students, while 13 went to CEGEP students and 12 to athletes in high school. The majority (19) were for academic excellence, 12 were for athletic support and two were for perseverance, designed for athletes facing difficult circumstances.
Over the past century, the Banque Nationale bursaries have supported numerous national team athletes, including McGill graduates
Mélodie Daoust and
Charline Labonté, both of whom have won multiple gold medals for Canada at the Winter Olympics.
