Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

(NOTE: FORFEIT) Gaels grab third as hockey Redmen falter; McGill to open playoffs vs Ridgebacks

(NOTE: It was announced by the OUA on Feb. 15 that Queen's used an ineligible player for this game and has retroactively forfeited the game to McGill. This means that the Redmen finished third (17-7-4), while Queen's finished fourth (18-10-0). The ruling was too late to change the playoff seedings for the quarter-finals but will be in place for the subsequent rounds)

KINGSTON -- Six different players scored for Queen's as the Gaels doubled No.10-ranked McGill 6-3 to conclude the OUA men's hockey season for both teams at the Kingston Memorial Centre, Saturday. The result clinched third-place in the OUA East for Queen's, which finished at 19-9-0, while the Redmen dropped to fourth with a 16-8-4 record.

Queen's will meet sixth-place Concordia (15-11-2) in the opening round of the OUA East playoffs, a best-of-three quarter-final series, while McGill will confront the fifth-place UOIT Ridgebacks (14-9-5).

The Redmen outshot Queen's 54-31 but fell victim to Law & Order, the special teams unit. McGill, which took 26 of the 36 penalty minutes called by the officials, was 0-for-3 on the power-play, while the Gaels went a productive 3-for-6.

Queen's tallied a pair of power-play markers before the game was five minutes old, with Henry Thompson and Francesco Vilardi striking paydirt at 3:05 and 4:34, respectively.

Antoine Dufort-Plante replied for McGill 10 minutes later and the score remained 2-1 for the rest of the period.

Slater Doggett put the Gaels ahead 3-1 with his team-leading 21st of the season, on another power-play, at 5:06 of the middle frame. It was the first of four consecutive markers for the home side before McGill replied.

Defenceman Nevin Guy tallied at 16:54 as Queen's took a death-grip 4-1 advantage into the final frame. Alex Row, another rearguard, made it 5-1 just 58 seconds into the third period and two minutes later, it was 6-1 when Duncan Campbell connected.

McGill rounded out the scoring with third-period markers from rookie Nicolas Poulin and sophomore Samuel Tremblay, at 7:53 and 12:26, respectively.

Winning goaltender Justin Fazio made 51 saves as his record improved to 13-4. Taking the loss for McGill was Louis-Philip Guidon, who conceded an uncharacteristic six goals on 31 shots. Guindon, who dropped to 16-11, became the first McGill goalie in the modern era to see duty in all regular season games, including 26 starts and a pair of relief appearances.

Defenceman Dominic Talbot-Tassi tied the McGill ironman record in regular season play by playing in all 28 games for the fourth consecutive year. He equals the 112-game standard set by Guillaume Doucet (2007-2011) for most consecutive regular season games played.

McGill, which leads the all-time series against Queen's with a 126-56-2 record, has now lost six of the last eight confrontations after winning 31 in a row.

Looking ahead to post-season play, the Gaels are tentatively slated to open on Wednesday at home against Concordia. They split their two-games with the Stingers by identical 4-3 scores, with the winning team triumphant at home both times.

McGill swept their two games against the UOIT Ridgebacks, winning 3-0 in Oshawa (Jan. 20) and 3-2 in overtime at McConnell Arena (Feb. 1). Because the teams are more than 350 kilometres apart, this series will open in Oshawa on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., with Games 2 and 3 slated for Montreal on Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m.

Regardless of what is posted on various websites, all times and dates are tentative until confirmed by the OUA on Monday.

The other first-round matchups in the OUA East division are top-seeded Ottawa vs. No.8 Laurentian and No.2 Carleton vs No.7 UQTR.

REDMEN RAP: Former McGill defenceman Mike Babcock (B.Ed.'86) was in town to coach the Toronto Maple Leafs to an overtime win against the Habs on Saturday... While he didn't wear his lucky McGill tie for the game, he did support his alma mater by stopping by the Athletics Dept. on Friday to shoot a short video in support of the upcoming McGill24 one-day fundraiser, dropping by McConnell Arena to address the hockey Martlets after their practice, taking in part of a Martlets volleyball game and going out to dinner with some of his former McGill teammates... Oh, he also found time to stop by his favourite deli for a smoked meat sandwich!...   Five different players led the Redmen scoring race at various times during the season but when the dust cleared, it was team captain Jerome Verrier who led the team points race for the second straight year with a 9-15-24 record in 28 games... Defenceman Nikolas Brouillard led the team in goals with 12, four shy of the school record for blueliners set three years ago by Samuel Labrecque... Two players led the squad in assists with 16 apiece: F Michael Cramarossa and D Dominic Talbot-Tassi...McGill finished tied for third of 20 OUA teams in goals scored (99) and ranked as the sixth-best defence (77 goals against).
