Kamsi colossal, collects career high as Martlet cagers silence Citadins

MONTREAL -- Kamsi Ogbudibe of Calgary scored a career-high 18 points as McGill defeated Université du Québec à Montréal 75-62 in a rare mid-week afternoon women's basketball match-up at the Centre Sportif, Friday.

The result marked McGill's ninth consecutive victory over UQAM, dating back to a 55-47 setback on Jan. 13, 2017 as the Martlets improved their lifetime record to 45-23 in 68 head-to-head meetings with the Citadins.

UQAM led 14-13 after the opening quarter but the Martlets took a 36-30 lead into halftime and held a 55-47 advantage after three.

Ogbudibe, a six-foot forward from Calgary, was one of four Martlet starters to reach double digits in scoring. The  science sophomore shot 5-for-6 from the field and drained 8-of-10 freebies. She also pulled down four rebounds and had a pair of assists in 33 minutes of court time.

Freshman Trishia Villedrouin from Montreal, tallied a career-high 14 points, along with two rebounds and three assists.  Gladys Hakizimana recorded 13 points and contributed three rebounds with one steal. Sirah Diarra, a 6-foot-1 centre from Longueuil, Que., contributed 10 points, nine rebounds and a steal in 20 minutes of court time. The only starter not to reach double figures was senior Geraldine Cabillo-Abante, who contributed eight points, three rebounds and one steal.

UQAM guard Veronique Boivin registered a "double-double" with a game-high 22 points and a dozen rebounds, while teammate Clara Blachier added 14 points.

The Martlets, who improved to 7-5 on the season, had a 32-31 edge in rebounds and a 1-0 margin in blocks, while UQAM had a beneficial 15-10 advantage in turnovers.

McGill shot 48.1 per cent from the field (26/54), made seven of 19 attempts from downtown (36.8%) and were 16-for-20 from the line. UQAM shot 36.5 from the floor (23/63), including a 4-for-17 mark from beyond the arc, and went 13-for-19 on free-throws.

Both teams have less than 24 hours to prepare for a rematch as the Citadins (2-10) will make the short jaunt to Love Competition Hall on Saturday (Feb. 9), with the opening tip-off slated for 4 p.m.
