MONTREAL --
Charles Miller scored 17 points and
Ibrahima Sylla registered a "double-double" as the Université du Québec à Montréal Citadins rallied from an eight-point deficit to defeat visiting McGill 73-69 in a rare men's basketball mid-week matinee, Thursday.
The game, which featured eight lead changes, was part of a stay-in-school promotion for children at UQAM's Centre sportif. McGill led 66-61 with 3:28 remaining but UQAM went on a 12-3 run to close out the contest.
Avery Cadogan led the Redmen with 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting. He was 3-for-4 from three-point range and made both of his free-throws. In 39 minutes of court-time, he added one rebound, one block, a steal and an assist.
McGill, which had a 43-30 edge in rebounding, led 18-14 after the opening quarter and extended that to 22-14 early in the second but UQAM bounced back to take a 33-29 advantage into halftime. The visitors won the third quarter 28-21 to go ahead 57-54 after three stanzas. The host team took the final quarter 19-12.
The season series is now tied at 1-1 -- including a 62-60 home-court victory for McGill -- with two meetings remaining.
Miller led the Citadins with an impressive 6-for-7 shooting, including a 5-for-5 performance from downtown. He was one of four UQAM players to reach double figures.
Alix Lochard added 15, while Sylla -- whose older sister Mariam previously starred for the McGill Martlets -- contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Jerry Joseph added 14 points.
Other McGill players to figure prominently in the scoring include
Jamal Mayali who came off the bench to rack up 15 points and five rebounds. Teammate
Quarry Whyne had nine, followed by
JJ Hamel-Carey (8) and
Levi Londole (7).
McGill shot 42.1 per cent from the floor (24/57), made six of 18 treys and drained 15 of 21 from the line. UQAM shot 37.3 per cent (25/67), made nine of 29 from downtown and sunk 14 of 19 freebies.
The two teams have four games remaining before playoffs and are tied for second in the RSEQ standings at 6-6. They will rendezvous again on Saturday in a 6 pm tip-off at Love Competition Hall.
