HOCKEY PLAYOFFS: Tremblay terrific, terrorizes tech school as Redmen rule Ridgebacks

MONTREAL -- Samuel Tremblay of St. Hubert, Que., registered two goals and added an assist as McGill skated to a 6-2 triumph over the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in men's hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday, to sweep their OUA East best-of-three quarter-final 2-0.

McGill, which won the series opener with six different scorers in an identical 6-2 result in Oshawa on Wednesday, advances to the divisional semifinals, also a best-of-three series, against second-seeded Carleton (18-5-5), which swept their first-round series over UQTR, 4-3 and 6-3. The Ravens took two of three meetings but McGill held a 12-11 advantage in goals.

The Redmen, who initially finished fourth in the OUA East, have been moved up to third ahead of Queen's, which dropped one spot after forfeiting a 6-3 win to McGill on Feb. 9, for using an ineligible player. The revised record puts the Montreal-based institution at 17-7-4, two points ahead of Queen's, which now has a record of 18-10-0. The Gaels will meet top-seeded Ottawa (22-2-4) in the other OUA East semifinal.

McGill outshot the Ridgebacks 36-22, including a 12-2 margin in the opening period. They led 4-0 after the first, before the visitors replied with the only goal of the second frame. The Redmen outscored UOIT 2-1 in the final stanza.

"I thought we played a good team game, we had everyone going and that was evident in having 11 different scorers over the two games, that's what we need at this time of the year," said bench boss Kelly Nobes, whose collegiate coaching record improved to 398-286-14 in 698 games overall, including a 258-118-3 mark in nine seasons at McGill. "You need everybody pulling on the rope and from the goalie on out we were really good in both games. "

Tremblay, a 23-year-old kinesiology junior, opened the scoring on the first shot of the game, only 38 seconds after puck drop. It was the ninth fastest goal from the start of a game in McGill history and the quickest playoff marker ever. The 5-foot-11 centre added a power-play goal to make it 6-1 at 10:27 of the final stanza and also assisted on Jordan Fournier's game-winning goal, which put McGill ahead 3-1 st 13:14 of the opening period. Tremblay is now sixth in OUA playoff scoring with 3-1-4 in two outings and has 12 points in his last 11 post-season contests dating back to 2018.

"I liked our last six periods, we played the way we needed to play against UOIT. We won on the road and their small rink is a tough place to win," noted Nobes. "We came out tonight the way we needed to and grinded for 60 minutes. We are pleased not only with the outcome but with the way we are playing right now."

Senior Christophe Lalonde connected with a man-advantage to put McGill ahead 2-0 at 12:43 of the first. It was his 50th career marker and 96th point in 128 games overall.

Rounding out the scoring for McGill was junior defenceman Maximilian Daigle and sophomore forward Keanu Yamamoto who is currently fourth in OUA playoff scoring with five points and now has a 5-6-11 record in 11 career playoff contests.

"We've got a healthy group and are peaking at the right time of the year," added Nobes, whose troops have an 8-4 record since the new year. "We had some adversity in the early part of the season but we've played better since Christmas and continually improved and grown as a group."

The Ridgebacks marksmen were Jake Bricknell of Port Perry, Ont., and Jack Patterson of Bedford, N.S.

McGill went 2-for-7 on the power-play, while UOIT went 1-for-3.

Winning goaltender Louis-Philip Guindon kicked aside 20 of 22 shots. The 23-year-old kinesiology major from St. Joseph du Lac, Que., improved his lifetime playoff record to 11-3 in 14 starts.

Ridgebacks netminder Michael Bullion, a freshman from Anchorage, Alaska, was far from golden, conceding six goals on 36 shots for the loss. Both goalies drew penalties, with Guindon getting called for delay of game after clearing a puck over the glass and Bullion drawing an unsportsmanlike minor shortly after giving up four goals in the first period.

UPDATED: McGill advances to the second playoff round for the sixth straight year and will open Game 1 of the series versus Carleton in the nation's capital on Thursday, Feb. 21. Game 2 is set for McConnell Arena on Saturday.  If a rubber match is needed, it will be back in Ottawa on Sunday. All three are slated to start at 7 p.m.

REDMEN RAP: The victory was the team's 100th lifetime playoff win in 190 post-season encounters since their first one way back in 1910...The McGill Fight Band played "Happy Birthday" for senior Dominic Talbot-Tassi -- who turned 25 -- when he skated out for his first shift early in the third period... He had one assist in the game and ranks second among all-time top-scoring McGill defencemen with a 33-124-157 dossier in 161 games overall... The team record-holder is Marc-Andre Dorion (38-154-192 in 174 games, 2008-2012)... The last time that McGill potted six or more goals in back-to-back playoff games was in 2011, when they won the OUA East final 6-1 over UQTR and captured the Queen's Cup championship 6-2 over Western... McGill has never before tallied at least six in back-to-back playoff games against the same team.... The team record for fastest goal from the opening faceoff is 11 seconds by Max Le Sieur (in a 7-6 win vs. Nipissing, F-14-14), followed by Benoit Levesque (0:14 vs RMC, D-1-12), Dominic Talbot-Tassi (0:14 vs UOIT, F-3-18), Patrick Delisle-Houde (0:16 vs Waterloo, N-3-12), Leo Konyk (0:20 vs Montreal, F-17-60), Martin Olivier (0:20 vs Waterloo, N-10-90), Ken Farmer (0:29 vs Harvard, J-8-34) and Patrice Tremblay (0:29 vs UPEI, J-4-91).
