Task force to be reckoned with as Concordia clips Martlets wings in college hoops

MONTREAL -- Caroline Task from Dorval, Que., scored a game-high 28 en route to reaching the 1,000-point plateau as the No. 10 ranked Concordia Stingers defeated McGill in an RSEQ women's basketball Valentine's Day showdown at John Dore Court, Thursday.

The Stingers won three of the four meetings against McGill and evened their head-to-head record to 65-65 overall since 1981.

The victory moved Concordia (9-5) past McGill (8-6) and into sole possession of second place, eight points behind undefeated Laval, which sits atop the Quebec conference at 13-0.

The Martlets had a strong first quarter, outscoring the Stingers 23-5 on the strength of 5-for-8 shooting from three-point range. But then the wheels fell off. Concordia outscored McGill 16-4 in the second quarter and 24-9 in the third, before the Martlets finally showed some mettle and took the final stanza 15-8.

Concordia had a 34-25 edge in rebounding, a 14-6 margin in steals and a favourable 21-13 advantage in turnovers. McGill led 4-1 in blocked shots.

Task, a human resources junior, shot 8-for-17, including a 6-for-10 mark from beyond the arc and went 6-for-8 from the free-throw line. She also contributed three rebounds, one assist and a steal. Other leading Stingers included Myriam Leclerc (11), along with Coralie Dumont and Lodanna Lamonth with eight apiece.

Gladys Hakizimana, a senior from Montreal, led the Martlets with a dozen points, shooting 5-for-10 from the floor. Sophomore Kamsi Ogbudibe of Calgary, Alta., added 11 points while 6-foot-1 scoring leader Sirah Diarra was held to just five points before leaving the game with an undisclosed injury suffered during a mid-court collision with 2:36 remaining in the third quarter. Sophomore Charlotte Clayton and freshman Delphine Robitaille added five points apiece.

McGill shot 42.9 per cent from the floor, went 6-for-17 from the three-point arc and made 3 of 5 attempts from the charity stripe. The Stingers shot 34.8, made 7-of-20 treys and drained 10-of-16 free throws.

Concordia (9-5) returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 16, against last-place Bishop's (2-12), then will close out the campaign at Laval on Feb.21.

McGill (8-6) also has two regular-season games remaining. They play at UQAM (2-11) on Feb. 21 (6 p.m.), before hosting No. 1 ranked Laval on Feb 23 with a 4 p.m. tip-off at Love Competition Hall.
