Momentary lapse of reason proves costly as Panthers pounce on Martlets

MONTREAL -- Kaylee Dufresne scored twice as the fifth-ranked UPEI Panthers pounced for three goals in 71 seconds against the unsuspecting McGill Martlets and escaped with a 4-3 come-from-behind victory at the Theresa Humes women's hockey tournament, Monday.

It was the first-ever meeting between these clubs.

McGill, ranked No. 6 in the nation, had a 31-17 advantage in shots. But after first-period goals by Stephanie Desjardins and Laura Jardin, they sat back and watched it dissipate in a momentary lapse of reason when the Panthers struck three times to start the second period.

Dufresne sparked the comeback with her first marker at 3:02 of the middle stanza. It took only 28 seconds for teammate Mireille Martin to knot the score at 2-2 and just 43 seconds after that, Rachel Colle gave UPEI a 3-2 lead at the 4:13 mark of the period.

"We made some mental mistakes without the puck that were uncharacteristic and hung our goaltender out to dry on numerous occasions," said Martlets head coach Peter Smith. "It's okay to make the odd mistake but we made them repeatedly and that can be frustrating from a coaching standpoint. But its all fixable and that's why we play these exhibition games over the holiday break."

McGill evened the count at 14:19 when freshman Anna MacCara found the back of the net but Dufresne struck again, tallying the game-winner at 2:09 of the final period.

Goaltender Sasha Weeks made 27 saves for the victory, while McGill's Tricia Deguire turned aside 13 of 17 and took the loss.

Both teams went scoreless on the power-play, with McGill going 0-for-3, while the Panthers were 0-for-2.

McGill (11-9) has one more exhibition on the docket -- at Bishop's on Jan. 3 in a 2 p.m. matinee -- before resuming league play on Jan. 10 with a key road game against the Montreal Carabins.

UPEI, which improved their impressive record to 21-6 overall, will resume their regular season in the AUS conference on Jan. 8 at Moncton.
