SHERBROOKE, QUE --
Jade Downie-Landry tallied twice and goaltender
Tricia Deguire earned an assist, a shutout and the win in front of her hometown friends as McGill blanked Bishop's 6-0 in women's hockey exhibition play at Molson Arena, Friday.
It was the first meeting between these teams since Nov. 11, 2001 and McGill improved to 3-0 lifetime against BU. The Martlets, who led 2-0 after the first period and 5-0 after two, had a lopsided 52-5 edge in shots.
The five saves was Deguire's lowest total among her 22 career shutouts in a Martlets uniform. Her previous single-game low in a whitewash was a 13-save effort in a 2-0 decision over Toronto on Oct. 1, 2016. The 5-foot-8 kinesiology senior from Sherbrooke also set up McGill's fifth goal -- her third career assist -- scored by rearguard
Cassidy Bell of Baldonnel, B.C., at 8:36 of the second period. Deguire improved her lifetime record to 65-46-1 in 116 career contests at the university level.
Downie-Landry paced the offence with an unassisted shorthanded marker to put the Martlets ahead 2-0 at 12:28 of the opening stanza. The psychology senior from St. Jean, Que., closed out the scoring at 8:46 of the final period with her 11th goal in 17 games overall.
Bell, who also collected a helper, scored her fifth goal in 21 games overall. It was the 10th by a McGill defenceman this season. The team's blue-line corps only combined for five markers in 36 contests last season.
Kellyane Lecours, an elementary education junior from Victoriaville, Que., was credited with the game-winning tally when she opened the scoring at 7:08 of the first period. Rounding out the scoring was
Marika Labrecque, her fifth, and
Olivia Ramos of New Westminster, B.C., with her first of the campaign.
Gaiters sophomore
Jade Shushu Saulnier-Cyr of Shediac, N.B., kicked aside 29 of 34 shots and was saddled with the loss.
Hannah Pelletier, a freshman from Toronto,
relieved her at the start of the third period and was credited with 17 saves on 18 shots.
McGill was 1-for-6 on the power-play, while BU was 0-for-5.
Bishop's, which tumbled to 3-9 overall, will resume their schedule on the weekend with road games at Mt. Allison and Moncton, Jan. 4-5, respectively. Currently playing an independent schedule, they are expected to join the RSEQ conference next season.
The Martlets, who improved to 12-9 overall, will resume regular season play on Jan. 10 when they take on the Montreal Carabins at CEPSUM Arena.
