Jenkins paces McGill past Guelph in college hoops

MONTREAL -- Sam Jenkins of Hamilton, Ont., scored a game-high 19 points and was one of five teammates to reach double-digits as McGill gobbled up the Guelph Gryphons 95-73 in the consolation round of the Olga Hrycak Classic, Sunday, at the Centre Sportif UQAM.

McGill, which has won six of their last seven games, finished tied with UQAM for second place as the Quebec rivals both posted a 2-1 record at the tourney. It was McGill's third straight win over Guelph in the past five years, including an 81-77 victory at the Hrycak Classic last year and a 101-78 conquest at the Frank Tindall tourney in Kingston, Oct. 4, 2014.

McGill shot a sizzling 53.2 per cent from the floor, draining 33 of 62 attempts. They jumped out into an impressive start and led 29-14 after the opening quarter. They outscored Guelph 18-12 in the second to take a resounding 47-26 advantage into halftime. The third quarter was even at 25-25 and McGill held a slight 23-22 edge in the final stanza.

Jenkins, a 6-foot-5 guard, shot 6-for-14 from the floor, 3-for-9 from the arc and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. The 21-year-old physical education junior added a team-high seven rebounds with three steals and one assist.

Joining him near the top of the tally sheet was Quarry Whyne (14 pts), Levi Londole (14), Cameron Elliot (11), Jamal Mayali (10) and Sami Al Uariachi (9).

Malcolm Glanville and Trevor Hutton paced the Gryphons with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

McGill, which won the turnover battle by an 18-8 margin, went 8-for-23 from downtown and dropped 21 of 28 from the charity stripe.

The Gryphons, who had a 35-30 edge in rebounding,  shot 37.9 per cent from the field (25/66), 25.9 from the arc (7/27) and 57.1 from the line (16/28).

McGill is now 10-10 on the season overall, including a 9-5 record against U SPORTS opponents and a 5-1 mark in RSEQ conference play. They will resume the regular season on Wednesday, Jan. 8 when Laval visits Love Competition Hall for an 8 p.m. tip-off in the first of a home-and-home confrontation that resumes two days later in Quebec City.

Guelph, which dropped to 8-12 overall, returns to OUA play on Jan. 8 when they take on Ontario Tech in Oshawa.
