MONTREAL -- It wasn't a buzzer-beater, technically speaking, but it was the next closest thing when rookie
Jael Kabunda knocked down a three-pointer with two seconds remaining as No.6 ranked Bishop's escaped with a 50-48 victory over McGill in women's basketball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.
Kabunda finished with 16 points and played all 40 minutes as the short-handed Gaiters improve to 4-1 and sit alone atop the RSEQ standing after the first semester. Bishop's played just seven players; the starting five each had 33 minutes of court time or more.
Sophomore
Amaiquen Siciliano of Argentina topped all scorers with a game-high 21 points and continues to lead the league in scoring.
Bishop's ended the game just 2-for-21 from behind the arc, none bigger than Kabunda's dagger in the final seconds. McGill was only 4-for-16 from long range.
No Martlet scored in double figures while veterans
Gladys Hakizimana and
Geraldine Cabillo-Abante fouled out down the stretch.
Top scorers for the Martlets were
Kamsi Ogbudibe and
Sirah Diarra, with nine and eight points, respectively.
McGill, which dropped to 2-4, will have a five-week break for exams and the holidays before resuming play on Jan. 8 against Laval (3-2) at Love Competition Hall.
Bishop's, which leads the Quebec conference with a 4-1 record, will host a holiday tournament between Christmas and New Years before returning to RSEQ action against visiting Laval on Jan. 16.
