Strong start shepherds Stingers past McGill in tepid Top 10 tilt

MONTREAL - Emmy Fecteau scored in the first minute and Léonie Philbert added what proved to be the game-winner seven minutes later as No. 1 ranked Concordia handed fifth-ranked McGill a 2-1 setback in RSEQ women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Sunday.

It was the fifth time in six games that the Martlets had one goal had decided their outcome. McGill has now dropped two straight meetings with Concordia but still holds an 87-46-5 in 138 lifetime meetings versus the Stingers since 1997.

"When you play a team like that, you have to play for 60 minutes," said McGill head coach Peter Smith. "We probably got a solid 45 minutes in. But you have to play for 60 minutes and we weren't good at it today. Bad things are going to happen at the beginning of a game and you have to recover from them and get back at it very quick. It took us a little bit too long to get back to our game."

The shots were even at 24-24 but McGill was unsuccessful on its only power-play opportunity, while Philbert's marker gave Concordia a 1-for-3 success rate.

"The other part for me is we have to start burying our chances," added Smith. "We had a lot of good scoring chances in the game but the puck wasn't (finding) the back of the net. We need to be more urgent with the puck when we get a dangerous scoring chance."

Fecteau opened the scoring just 55 seconds after the opening faceoff, setting the stage for Philbert's power-play marker at 7:56.

McGill's Lea Dumais from Beaconsfield, Que., cut the gap in half at 9:56 of the second period.

Senior defenceman Rachel Santini of Toronto and junior forward Christiana Colizza from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., collected assists on the play. Dumais is the 13th different McGill player to register a goal this season, three of which have come from blueliners.

But the Martlets were unable to solve Stingers goaltender Alice Philbert a second time. The older of the Concordia sister duo, Philbert registered 23 saves for the victory and extended her record to an impressive 8-0.

McGill netminder Tricia Deguire kicked aside 22 of 24 shots in a losing cause as her record fell to 3-5.

A more positive for McGill was the return of sniper Jade Downie-Landry to the lineup after missing four games with an injury suffered on an unpenalized bodycheck in the season opener against Ottawa. She appeared somewhat rusty in the opening period but looked more at ease as the game wore on.

The Martlets, who dropped to 3-3-3, are off until Nov. 30 when they host Ottawa (4-4-1) in a 3 p.m. start to close out the fall semester.

Concordia improved to 8-0-1 and remains first in the RSEQ standings, six points ahead of its closest pursuant, the Montreal Carabins (5-3-1). The Stingers will play next on Dec. 1 against fifth-place Carleton (2-5-1).
