Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Deguire deals doughnuts, as hockey pucksters outbox punchless Gee-Gees

MONTREAL -- Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., posted a 22-save shutout and McGill exploded for three goals in a three-minute span en route to a 3-0 triumph over visiting Ottawa in women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.

The Martlets, who have now won four of their last five games against uOttawa, improved their lifetime record to 102-22-7 in 131 lifetime meetings since 1997-98.

McGill, which improved to 4-3-3, had a 30-22 edge in shots and went 1-for-3 on the power-play. The Gee-Gees, who dropped to 4-5-1, were 0-for-4 with the extra attacker.

"It was a solid effort. We started out a little bit slow and settled in with three goals in the second and managed that lead very well in the third," said Peter Smith, who improved his career record behind the McGill bench to 521-225-33 in 779 games overall. "We were organized and played with good structure in the third. It was good to end the semester with a win like that."

It was the second goose-egg of the season for the 5-foot-8 Deguire, who now has registered 21 goal-less outings in 113 career contests. The 22-year-old kinesiology senior improved her record to 4-5 on the season and leads the Quebec conference in both goals-against average (1.49) and save percentage (.946).

Kellyane Lecours of Victoriaville, Que., broke a scoreless draw at 14:45 of the second period, with what proved to be the game-winning tally.

Only 71 seconds later, defenceman Cassidy Bell, a senior from Fort St. John, B.C., made it 2-0. McGill now has four goals from their blue-line corps, which only tallied twice last season.

It took just another minute and 44 seconds for the Martlets to strike again, when junior Marika Labrecque of Lac Etchemin, Que., tallied her first of the season at 18:40 to end a nine-game scoring drought. Despite the lack of goals, the shifty play-maker ranks second on the team with six points in 10 contests.

Gee-Gees netminder Aurelie Dubuc was beaten three times on 30 shots and took the loss, dropping to 3-3 on the season.

McGill, which owns a 10-8 record overall, will take a month long break for exams and the holidays, before resuming play at the Theresa Humes Tournament hosted by Concordia, Dec. 28-30, at the Ed Meagher Arena. The Martlets are slated to open against the NCAA's Long Island University on Dec. 28 at 6 p.m., then get a day off before playing UPEI in a 12 noon start.
