OTTAWA --
Marimée Godbout-Parent of Rouyn-Noranda, Que., scored at 3:24 of overtime as Ottawa rallied from a late two-goal deficit to edge McGill 4-3 in RSEQ women's hockey at the Minto Sports Complex, Friday.
McGill was 1-for-4 with the extra attacker, while the Gee-Gees had a whopping 11 power-play chances and tallied two PP markers over the final five minutes to force a five-minute 4-on-4 period. It was the most PP chances ever called against the Martlets, breaking the single-game team record of nine issued in a 2-1 loss to Montreal on March 3, 2013.
"There were some very creative penalty calls out there today," noted McGill head coach
Peter Smith, whose team had built a 3-1 lead before serving six consecutive penalties in the final frame. "Our penalty kill was good but they eventually wore us down."
McGill actually played shorthanded for 18 minutes and 38 seconds in the contest, including almost all of the final 10 minutes of the third period. Trailing 3-1 with five minutes to go, Ottawa pulled the goalie and went on to score on 6-on-4 chance at 14:38. They then netted the equalizer on a 5-on-3 scenario at 19:54 to force the extra session.
The Gee-Gees only managed to outshoot McGill 37-30, despite all the time in the sin-bin. After all was said and done, the Martlets remained atop the Quebec league's PK statistics with a 90.7 per cent success rate. But more importantly, Ottawa (4-3-1) moved into a three-way tie for second-place in the Quebec league standings with McGill (3-2-3) and Montreal (4-3-1).
Godbout-Parent's winning tally came with just 1:26 remaining in the five-minute extra frame. The 5-foot-5 biochemistry senior outskated a defender before beating Martlets goaltender
Tricia Deguire with a neat backhand-forehand move.
Mélodie Bouchard scored twice and registered one assist for Ottawa. She opened the scoring at 3:55 of the first period and later added a power-play goal at 14:38 of the third, cutting McGill's lead to 3-2.
Alice Filion forced overtime six seconds before the final whistle, while McGill sophomore
Kess Notargiacomo was serving a double-minor for a checking-to-the-head infraction. Her second penalty lasted 1:54 into the overtime but was neutralized by the besieged PK unit.
Nicole Howlett from Delta, B.C., was one of three Martlets to score. The six-foot psychology senior tied the game at 1-1 at 13:08 of the first period. It was her second of the season.
Teammates
Mackenzie McCallum of Morden, Man., and
Shana Walker from North York, Ont., also tallied for McGill in the middle frame before the third period debacle.
Deguire made 33 saves in a losing cause between the pipes for McGill. The Sherbrooke, Que., native dropped to 3-4 on the season but remains second among league leaders with a 1.62 goals-against average and a .944 save percentage.
Aurélie Dubuc, her counterpart from Trois Rivières, Que., stopped 27 shots and improved to 3-2.
Both teams are back in action on Sunday (Nov. 24), with Ottawa visiting the Montreal Carabins (4-3-1) and McGill hosting No.1 ranked Concordia (7-0-1) in a 3 p.m. faceoff at McConnell Arena. The division-leading Stingers suffered their first blemish of the season on Friday when visiting Carleton also tallied two late goals and pulled off a 3-2 upset in overtime.
MARTLET MURMURS: The 22 penalty minutes incurred by McGill ranked as the team's fourth-highest single-game total ever. The only games in team history where McGill had more minutes (but less shorthanded scenarios) was
30 PIMs in a 5-2 win at Ottawa (8 PP opportunities) on Jan. 19, 2014, followed by
26 PIMs in a 3-2 loss to Montreal (8 PPOs) on Oct. 29, 2011; and
25 PIMs in a 4-3 loss to Montreal (6 PPOs) on Feb. 5, 2016.
