HALIFAX -- Both of the McGill University swim teams will enter Day 3 atop the standings at the Kemp-Fry Invitational, a major six-team Maritime meet hosted by Dalhousie University at the Dalplex pool, Nov. 15-17.
Thus far, the McGill men have won six golds, erased three school records and one conference mark, while the women's squad has produced five gold medal performances.
Clement Secchi, a management sophomore from France, struck gold three times and erased three records. He swam the 100-metre butterfly in a blistering 52.44 seconds to break both school (53.44) and RSEQ conference marks (52.93). He also took the 50 fly in 23.94 but bettered that time in the prelims (23.72) to surpass
Samuel Wang's previous McGill best (23.81) and then, Secchi combined with three others to touch the wall in 7:24.06, breaking a six-year old school record in the 4x200 freestyle relay.
The quartet, which included
William Simpson of Kingston, Ont.,
Kade Wist of Calgary and
David Brenken of Toronto, surpassed the previous high of 7:24.89.
Secchi's other race victory was in the 200 free (1:48.78).
Simpson, a psychology senior, also qualified for Nationals with a record-breaking gold-medal effort in the 200 freestyle leg of the 4x200 relay. He was clocked in 1:48.72, erasing
Marc-Andre Benoit's mark (1:49.42) set in 2012.
Two other McGill rookies garnered gold, including
Johan Boscher, a science major from France, who took the 1500 free in 15:56.62, and
Eric Pelletier, a software engineering freshman from Baie d'Urfe, Que., who claimed the 400 individual medley in 4:19.73.
On the women's side, the Martlets produced numerous outstanding performances, with
Gabriella Doueihy and
Daphne Danyluk each winning a pair of races, while
Kelsey Crocker won one.
Doueihy, a biology junior from Lebanon, won the 800 free on Friday, crossing the line in 8:51.81, three seconds shy of the school best but registering the team's fastest time in at least a decade. The next day, she finished atop the podium in the 400 individual medley (4:54.08).
Danyluk, an anatomy freshman from Montreal, won both the 50 back (28.68) and the 200 back (2:11.19).
Crocker, a first-year transfer from U of T, where she shone for four seasons, won the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.65. A native of Calgary who is working on a master's degree in human genetics, she is following in the footsteps of her brother Bradley, who swam for McGill last year.
The three-day meet wraps up on Sunday, with prelims at 9 a.m. Eastern, followed by finals at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.
Live results are available for both sessions, with the finals slated to be streamed on
