MONTREAL –
Jordan-Ty Fournier of Dorval, Que., registered a hat-trick and tied a school record with a pair of shorthanded goals as McGill tripled Laurentian University 6-2 in OUA men's hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
It was the 14th consecutive victory for McGill over the Voyageurs and improved their lifetime record against the Sudbury-based school to 25-5-2 in 32 meetings since they first tangoed in 1988.
The McGillians, who outshot Laurentian 48-30, led 2-0 after the opening period and 4-2 after the second.
"Our leaders did a great job stepping up and leading the way early in the first period and trying to get some momentum early," said McGill head coach
Liam Heelis, whose team struggled out of the gate the previous day against Ontario Tech before mounting a dramatic 4-3 comeback in overtime.
In stark contrast to the 0-for-6 effort in their previous game, McGill managed to exploit both ends of special teams, where they collected four of their six markers.
Most notably, it was Fournier who stung the Voyageurs shorthanded twice -- his first at 5:23 of the middle frame to make it 3-0 and again in the third period at 15:42, upping the lead to 5-2. It tied the team's single-game record for most shorties by one player, a feat now accomplished seven times in school history (see complete list below).
The 6-foot-2, 199-pound power forward completed his hat-trick on the PP, just 54 seconds before the final whistle. He now has five points, including two assists, in nine OUA games played thus far and is one point away from matching his freshman season total of six in 20 contests.
"Fournier is a workhorse," noted Heelis of the 22-year-old Canadian Studies sophomore who previously played in the QMJHL with Victoriaville and Cape Breton. "The little things that he does don't appear in the statistics but he is a heart-and-soul player for us so its great to see him get rewarded tonight for his work."
Quinn Syrydiuk, a junior forward from Toronto, opened the scoring with his second of the season at 4:20 of the first period.
Defenceman
Dominic Talbot-Tassi, a 25-year-old from Mascouche, Que., added a power-play marker 90 seconds later, extending the advantage to 2-0. The fifth-year mining engineer added a pair of helpers and now leads all OUA rearguards with 17 points, including 13 helpers, in 13 games. He owns a lifetime
29-99-128 record in 125 career regular season games and a
37-146-183 dossier in 182 contests overall. Talbot-Tassi is two shy of the McGill career regular season points record for defencemen, held by
Marc-André Dorion, and needs nine to equal his overall mark. Dorion, who accomplished his records in four seasons, patrolled the McGill blueline from 2008 to 2012 before moving on to a pro career in Europe.
Harlan Orr, a kinesiology senior from Lake Country, B.C., was the other marksman for McGill, notching his third of the season.
Scoring for the Voyageurs were
Russell Nowry and
Brett Jacklin, both in the second period.
In addition to McGill's PP and PK tallies, they killed off all three of Laurentian's man-advantage situations. McGill has neutralized 19 of its last 20 opposition power-plays and is ranked fourth in OUA penalty-killing with an 88.7 per cent success rate (55/62).
"Special teams is something very important in today's game, especially with the number of penalties (called)," Heelis noted. "We did a great job on the PK and players executed our structure. On the PP, our guys have the confidence to make the plays available to them. We're lucky as a group to have them working together the way they do."
The result also marked the first career win in three regular season outings for rookie goaltender
Emanuel Vella, a freshman from Toronto, who made 28 saves on 30 shots. Recruited from the OHL's Flint Firebirds, he improved his record to 1-2, lowered his goals-against average to 3.02 and enhanced his save percentage to .904.
Laurentian goaltender
Brayden Lachance lasted 26:55 in net for the Voyageurs, allowing four goals on 20 shots before being relieved by junior
Mackenzie Savard, who was beaten twice on 28 shots. Lachance, a sophomore, was saddled with the loss, dropping his record to 0-2.
Laurentian (3-8-2) is off until Nov. 20 against Nipissing (4-6-3) in North Bay, Ont., while McGill (7-5-1) visits Queen's (5-8-0) Nov. 23.
