MONTREAL – Four players registered double digit performances as the Université du Québec à Montréal pulled away at halftime to defeat visiting McGill 94-71 in an RSEQ men's basketball game, before a sold-out crowd of more than 1,000 at the Centre Sportif, Thursday.
Both teams evened their record at 1-1. It was a fourth loss for McGill in their last five attempts against the Citadins.
Combined with a convincing 70-38 victory over the Martlets in the earlier game, it marked UQAM's first doubleheader sweep over McGill since Nov. 17, 2016.
The score was tied 16-16 after the opening quarter and UQAM managed to build a narrow 45-41 lead at halftime. But the hosts extended their cushion to 68-58 after three and then overpowered McGill 26-13 in the final stanza.
Forward
Alix Lochard led UQAM with 23 points. The 22-year-old senior shot 9-for-16 from the floor and sunk all three of his free-throw chances. He also collected eight rebounds and two assists with a team-high 35 minutes played. Accompanying Lochard in double figures was
Frantson Demosthene (21 pts),
Karim Sabban (17) and
Jonathan Noel-Jeune (16).
Quarry Whyne was McGill's primary offensive outlet. The 6-foot-5 economics sophomore from Montreal scored 21 points, shooting 7-for-16, including a near perfect 7-for-8 performance from the line. He added a pair of steals. Fellow starter
Jamal Mayali was next on the docket with 17 points. The junior guard from Toronto shot 6-for-9 from the floor, including a clean 2-for-2 in his trey attempts.
JJ Hamel-Carey tallied 11 points in 19 minutes of court time off the bench for McGill. The junior point-guard from Montreal North connected on half his field-goal attempts (4/8) and sank two of three from the line.
Junior
Sam Jenkins of Hamilton, Ont., was a workhorse for the visitors, racking up a team-leading 36 minutes of play but was limited to five points in the wake of a 36-point outing last week against Laval.
The Citadins had a 31-24 advantage in rebounds, 13-5 edge in steals and bested McGill 2-1 in blocked shots. UQAM shot an impressive 50 per cent from the floor (37/74) but drained only seven of 26 treys, compared to McGill, which shot 44.8 (26/58) and made five of 18 from beyond the arc. Each team got to the line a significant amount. McGill went 14-for-18 from the stripe while the Citadins were 13-for-17.
Both sides travel to the Eastern Townships next to battle Bishop's (0-1). The Citadins (1-1) get first crack at the Gaiters on Nov. 16 while McGill (1-1) must wait until Nov. 21 at 8 p.m.
