McGill collegians clip Concordia in classic Corey Cup contest

MONTREAL – Senior left winger Christophe Lalonde of Mirabel Que., scored once and added a pair of assists as fourth-ranked McGill skated to a 5-2 triumph over No.8 Concordia in the 33rd annual Corey Cup confrontation in OUA men's hockey at the Ed Meagher Arena, Saturday.

The result, combined with Friday's 4-2 win at Ottawa, concluded a perfect four-point weekend for McGill and avenged a 3-2 overtime loss to the Stingers on Oct. 3. McGill snapped a four-game losing slump against the Stingers and improved to 18-10-3 in Corey Cup play, their first Cup win since a 2-1 overtime victory on Jan. 20, 2017. The Stingers are 11-19-3 in Cup play.

"It is never easy when you're missing some of your core players," said head coach Liam Heelis, whose team has had to contend with the absence of injured co-captains Samuel Tremblay and Nathanael Halbert. "But slowly and steadily our guys have stuck with the process and its an opportunity for others to step up. They're coming together each and every day closer as a unit. Tonight they embodied some of the themes which they've spoken about like resilience, being adaptable and staying composed. We kept our composure today even when we were down one and found a way to battle through. That's what good teams do."

Six of the game's seven goals came in the final frame.

Guindon, a kinesiology senior, was coming of a scintillating 56-save performance in Friday's 4-2 win at Ottawa. The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder from St. Joseph du Lac, Que., made 32 saves on 34 Concordia shots, improving his record to 4-2 on the season, 48-24 lifetime in OUA league play and 68-35-1 in 106 career games overall between the pipes for McGill.

Trailing 1-0 for most of the match, McGill had a 49-34 edge in shots, including lopsided 14-4 and 24-15 margins in the second and third periods. But a patient effort finally paid dividends with a season-high five goals in the third period as blueliner Nikolas Brouillard, Lalonde, Ryan Penny, rookies Phil Gilmour and Blake Hayward all tallied in quick succession, with the latter two being empty-netters in the final 25 seconds.

The only Stingers who managed to beat hot-handed McGill netminder Louis-Philip Guindon were forward Tyler Hylland, at 15:41 of the first period, and rearguard Bradley Lalonde at 19:35 of the final stanza.

The two Lalondes, who are unreleated, both scored with an extra attacker on the ice.

McGill's Lalonde, a stocky 5-foot-9, 185-pound industrial relations major, scored on the power-play at 6:48 before turning provider on both Penny's and Gilmour's markers. The former AHL Norfolk Admirals forward upped his career total to 42 goals in 94 regular season games over his five campaigns.

Eleven penalties were called in the game, eight of which were issued to Stingers. McGill was 1-for-6 on the power-play, while Concordia finished the game 1-for-2.

Stingers netminder Marc-Antoine Turcotte was beaten three times on 47 shots in a losing cause.

Concordia (3-3-1) wraps up its weekend on Sunday (Oct. 27) against Royal Military College (2-4-0).

McGill (4-3-1) will host Queen's (4-3-0) on Nov. 2 in their annual Friends of McGill Hockey Homecoming Weekend.

McGILL MEMENTOS: Both McGill and RMC have swapped their two upcoming confrontations. The game set for Nov. 30 will now be played at McConnell Arena, while the pne scheduled for Jan. 24 will be played at Constantine Arena in Kingston, Ont.
