MONTREAL –
Geoffrey James of Edmonton, Alta., scored 22 points as the Alberta Golden Bears overpowered McGill 95-75 in a men's basketball preseason game at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.
The result spoiled a superb offensive output by the McGill duo of
Jamal Mayali (26 points) and
Levi Londole, who registered a "double-double" with 25 points and 13 rebounds.
It was the first McGill-Alberta duel in exactly six years. Last time around, the Bears also visited Love Competition Hall on Oct. 19, 2013 and won 72-63.
The Golden Bears, who finished third with a 15-5 record in last year's Canada West standings, improved their preseason record to 4-0. McGill, which finished second in the Quebec league last season at 9-7, is now 3-6 in preseason play.
The prairies-based squad fell behind 16-15 after the opening quarter but never trailed again. They led 38-28 at halftime and 71-56 after three, then outscored McGill 24-19 in the final stanza. The visitors held a 17-15 edge in turnovers but McGill had the 32-27 rebounding advantage.

Mayali, whose 26 points was two shy of his career-high, was 9-for-15 shooting. The 6-foot-3, 178-pound junior guard from Toronto made two of seven attempts from three-point range and went 6-for-10 from the line. He added five rebounds, four steals, a blocked shot and one assist in 36 minutes of court-time.
Londolé, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound junior, established career-highs in both points and rebounds. He played 35 minutes and shot a sizzling 9-for-12 from the field, including a 2-for-2 effort from beyond the arc. He was 5-for-8 from the charity stripe and was credited with one steal.
Rounding out the scoring for McGill was

Cameron Elliot (2),
JJ Hamel-Carry (2) and
Antoney Bell (2).
James was one of six Bears to reach double figures, along with
Cole Knudsen (17),
Ivan Ikomey (16),

Alberta shot 51.5 per cent from the floor, including 12-for-29 from the three-point arc. Ikomey led his team in that department, with a superb 5-for-10 performance.
McGill mustered a 43.5 success rate from the field (27/62) and was 8-for-29 from downtown. The Golden Bears went 15-for-21 from the foul-line, while McGill was 13-for-22.
