Son of Hall of Famer Brodeur posts Gee-Gees first-ever shutout on McGill ice

MONTREAL -- Goaltender Anthony Brodeur of Morin Heights, Que., posted a 33-save shutout as the fourth-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees blanked No. 10 McGill 4-0 in OUA men's ice hockey at McConnell Arena, Friday night.

The Redmen had a 33-23 edge in shots but were unable to solve Brodeur, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound human kinetics junior who improved to 8-2 , en route to collecting his first shutout of the season and third in 38 career regular season appearances. He wears No. 30, the same number as his father, the legendary NHL netminder Martin Brodeur, who was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018.

McGill was 0-for-6 on the power-play, while Ottawa was 0-for-4.

For the Gee-Gees, it was their second-ever shutout over McGill in 198 lifetime meetings dating back to the series debut in 1968. It was also Ottawa's first whitewash over the Redmen since a 2-0 decision on Feb. 9, 2002 and their first-ever goose egg on McGill ice.

The division-leading Gee-Gees, who were beaten 2-1 by McGill in the OUA East best-of-three semifinals last spring, have now won both confrontations with McGill this season, including a 5-1 decision on Oct. 5 in the nation's capital. Ottawa improved their lifetime record with McGill to 84-104-10.

The visitors broke a scoreless draw midway through the second period with two goals in 37 seconds. Forward Jean-Francois Plante of Sherbrooke Que., opened the scoring with what proved to be the game-winner at 10:07. Eric Locke from Toronto, Ont., responded on the next shift with an insurance goal at 10:44. Kevin Domingue of Laval, Que., widened the gap to 3-0 on a breakaway at 7:12 in the final stanza and Mathieu Newcomb from Grande-Digue, N.B., potted an empty-netter at 19:21.

McGill netminder Louis-Philip Guindon of St. Joseph du Lac, Que saved 19 of 22 shots and took the loss as his record fell to 10-7.

The fourth-place Redmen who dropped to 10-5-3 in the OUA East standings, return to action Saturday night (Jan. 5) when they host sixth-place UQTR (9-6-2) in a crucial matchup at McConnell Arena. Puck-drop is slated for 7 p.m.

Ottawa, which remains atop the OUA East with a 14-1-2 record, will spend Saturday in Montreal before heading to Trois-Rivieres to play UQTR at Le Colisée on Jan. 6.

REDMEN RAP:The McGill PK unit has allowed only one PP goal on the last 41 chances in OUA action... McGill has now been shutout twice this season, including a 2-0 loss at UQTR... The last time that the Redmen had been blanked twice in a season was in 2016-17 when they fell 4-0 at Queen's (Nov. 26/16 ) and 1-0 at home to Ryerson in overtime (Dec. 2/16)... Nathan Chiarlitti, who captained the Redmen to the Queen's Cup league championship last year while earning both Academic All-Canadian and Academic All-America honours, made a triumphant return to McConnell Arena as part of the Gee-Gees coaching staff. He earned an undergrad degree from St. Francis Xavier, a master's degree from McGill and is now working on a medical degree at the University of Ottawa... Former Redmen head coach Kelly Burnett passed away on Dec. 22 in Halifax at the age of 92. Burnett coached the team for three seasons, from 1961 to 1964... Windsor's 3-0 victory over Laurier on Friday night, featured a rare penalty-free game... It was second penalty-free contest in the OUA this season, preceded by the Waterloo-Toronto game on Dec. 1/18.
