OTTAWA --
Alexandre Boivin scored twice as the Carleton Raven's defeated No. 6 ranked McGill University 4-2 in OUA men's hockey at the Ice House, Saturday.
The Ravens took their regular season series with McGill, including a 5-4 overtime win on Nov. 17 and a 6-2 loss to the Redmen last week. As a result, Carleton improved to 14-5-5 and moved into sole possession of third place in the OUA East, one point ahead of McGill (14-6-4). Four games remain for each team before playoffs.
The game featured 52 minutes in penalties, including 32 to Carleton, which leads the league with 502 minutes in 24 games. McGill had a 38-28 edge in shots but the Redmen were 0-for-6 on the power play while the Ravens went 1-for-7. McGill's PP unit now sits at 13th in the 20-team conference with a 16.3 per cent success rate. The PK unit ranks fifth at 87.6 per cent.
Carleton forward
Matthew Forchuk opened the scoring at 5:49 of the first period, taking advantage of a turnover by McGill goaltender
Louis-Philippe Guindon, who misplayed the puck behind his net to
Adam Chapman, who quickly centred it to Forchuk in front of the empty net.
Samuel Tremblay, a junior from St. Hubert, Que., tied the game at 17:20 of the opening stanza with his eighth marker of the season.
The Raven took the lead only 20 seconds into the middle fram when Boivin connected on his first of two, connecting on a power-play. McGill again notched the equalizer when
Christophe Lalonde from Mirabel, Que., struck at 10:08 of the second period to tie the game up 2-2. But Boivin potted the game-winner for the Ravens just five minutes later and
Jacob Smith added an empty netter at 19:21 of the final frame.
Junior netminder
Francois Brassard started for the Ravens and kicked out 34 of 36 shots, improving his record to 12-7. McGill's Guindon, a science junior from St. Joseph du Lac, Que., saved 24 of 27 shots in a losing cause as his record fell to 14-9.
With two weeks remaining before playoffs, only five points separate second place from seventh on the log-jammed OUA East. The Redmen, who are assured of a playoff berth, could still finish anywhere from second to seventh place.
McGill (14-6-4) remains overnight in Ottawa to confront the first-place Gee-Gees (18-1-4) on Sunday (Jan. 27) at the Minto Sports Complex in a 3 p.m. start. The game will be streamed live on OUA-TV. A McGill victory would move the Redmen out of fourth and into a tie with Queen's (17-7-0) for second in the division. Carleton (14-5-5) is off until Feb, 1 when they travel to seventh-place UQTR (13-7-4).
FACES IN THE CROWD: Among those in attendance at the game was
Mike Buffone, a native of Ottawa who who skated for the Redmen from 1992 to 1996.
