Volleyball's Vercheval vexes Vert & Or as Martlets extend win streak to three

MONTREAL -- Claire Vercheval scored a game-high 17 points as seventh-ranked McGill swept Sherbrooke 3-0 in RSEQ women's volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Friday evening. The set scores were 25-20, 25-23 and, 27-25. The Martlets were dressed in pink for their annual "Dig for the Cure" game, benefiting the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation.

McGill, which leads the Quebec conference with a 12-3, is two wins shy of last year's 14-6 record. The Martlets need four victories in their five remaining games to tie the school's single-season win record set in 2005-06 (16-5), a standard matched the following year (16-9).

Sherbrooke dropped to 5-9 and sit fifth in the six-team RSEQ league.  Despite their record, the Vert & Or hung in tough and had a 24-23 lead in the final set before succumbing.

"Sherbrooke is not a team that is going to quit," said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau, a former product of the Sherbrooke program who went on to play for Canada at the Los Angeles Olympics. "They are always going to fight for every ball they are playing and we can never take that for granted."

"We need to focus on good execution. The girls on defence did a good job following our game plan but on offence, it's harder to stick to a game plan (because the game is in constant flux)."

Vercheval, a 6-foot-1 power-hitter, earned her points on the strength of 13 kills, two aces and a pair of stuff blocks. She also chipped in three digs.

Emilie Matte De Grasse, a fifth-year physical education senior from Montreal, tallied seven kills, one service ace and a block. The 5-foot-10 power-hitter added six digs and posted a team-leading 2.25 passing ratio out of 3.

Other leading scorers for McGill were freshman Charlene Robitaille (8.5 pts) of Mont St. Gregoire, Que., and senior Mila Krunic (7 pts) of Oakville, Ont.
.
Sherbrooke was led by Maude Frechette with 11.5 points, followed by Eve Chaine (9) and Veronique David (7.5).

Both returns to the court on Sunday (Jan. 27), when Sherbrooke (5-9) visits Montreal (10-4) and McGill travels to the nation's capital to play last-place Ottawa (1-12) in 2 p.m. start.
