MONTREAL -- Freshman
Quarry Whyne came off the bench to score a career-high 21 points, including a game-winning trey with 25 seconds remaining as McGill rallied from a 15-point deficit to stun Bishop's 84-80 in a men's basketball thriller at Love Competition Hall, Thursday.
The game featured seven lead changes and a combined 27 treys, including a 15-for-34 performance from three-point range for Bishop's and a 12-for-36 effort by the Redmen.
Bishop's went on an early 9-1 run and held a 19-18 edge after the first quarter, then transformed that into a 45-35 lead at halftime. The Gaiters opened up a healthy 56-41 margin with 6:24 remaining in the third before the wheels fell off. McGill outscored BU by a lopsided 29-19 margin in the third and then 20-16 in the final stanza. The Redmen had a 16-13 turnover advantage that directly translated into a 21-11 edge on the scoreboard.
The Gaiters seemed in control down the stretch with an 80-74 lead and just 56 seconds remaining. But McGill senior
Avery Cadogan hit a trey followed seconds later by a successful free-throw after a charge and a technical foul was called on Bishop's starter
Abdul Hamane, who fouled out with 45 ticks left on the clock. Some 20 seconds later, Whyne stepped up and nailed his fateful winning trey to put McGill ahead for good at 81-80
"I explained to them at halftime that we hadn't really followed the game plan that I had put together, so we had to focus on that a little more in the second half, especially defensively," revealed McGill head coach
David DeAveiro of his halftime speech. "I'm really proud of our guys, they never gave up. To pull it out like that is great for their confidence."
Whyne, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound shooting-guard, had entered the contest with a season-high of eight points in a preseason affair at Brock (Oct. 5/18). The 19-year-old arts freshman from Montreal shot 6-for-12 from the floor, including a 4-for-7 effort from three-point range. He also went 5-for-6 from the free-throw line and added three rebounds with a steal in 28 minutes of court time.
"Learning how to play without (injured starters)
Alex Paquin and
Isaiah Cummins was a big part of our turnaround. We've been waiting for one of our young guys to step up and take the bull by the horns and we saw a little bit of that today with
Quarry Whyne. He was outstanding. He's probably one our best scorers in practice and we've been encouraging him to play with the same confidence in games. He did that tonight."
Whyne was one of four Redmen to reach double digits, a group that included Cadogan, a 6-foot-5 guard from Winnipeg, who played all 40 minutes and came away with 19 points, six rebounds, three steals, a pair of assists and one blocked shot. Before Cadogan, the last to play the full 40 was
Dele Ogundokun in a 59-48 playoff win over Laval, March 3, 2017.
"Cadogan's an amazing story, to look at how far he's come in his five years to where he's at right now," noted DeAveiro, who improved to 177-119 in 296 games in his nine seasons at McGill, including a 99-37 mark in regular season play. "He's become our best player this year."
Teammates
JJ Hamel-Carey contributed 16 points, a pair of rebounds and five assists, while
Noah Daoust added 10 points and seven boards. The 6-foot-7, 221-pound senior from Dorval, Que., was sometimes matched up against his younger brother
Joshua Daoust, a 6-foot-9, 225-pound junior, who tallied two points, one rebound and a steal for Bishop's.
The Gaiters also had four players in double figures, led by
Nervens Demosthene (17),
Joany Castor-Thadal (14),
Kevin Davis (13) and
Abdul Kamane (12).
The Redmen shot 42.2 per cent from the floor (27/62), 33.3 from downtown, and 78.3 from the line (18/23), compared to Bishop's, which shot 45.5, 44.1 and 71.4, respectively.
McGill has now won two straight over Bishop's since losing the first meeting 79-69 on Nov. 15 and the Redmen have now won 14th of their last 16 confrontations against the Gaiters.
McGill (4-4) moved into a three-way tie for second place in the RSEQ conference with Laval (4-4) and UQAM (4-5). The last-place Gaiters dropped to 3-8. Up next for both sides is a rematch in Lennoxville on Saturday at 8 p.m., following the McGill-Bishop's women's game at 6 p.m.
REDMEN RAP: Prior to Cadogan, the last time a McGill player saw 40 minutes of court-time in regular season play was three years ago, when
Dele Ogundokun accomplished the feat in a 76-63 win at Bishop's on Jan. 30, 2016... Ogundokun also owns the school single-game record with 44 minutes in a 95-83 double overtime loss at Concordia on Jan. 21, 2016.
