No.2-ranked Stingers use explosive start to get revenge over Martlet cagers

MONTREAL -- Myriam Leclerc scored 18 points and Coralie Dumont posted a "double-double" as No.2 ranked Concordia defeated McGill 59-47 in a women's basketball matinee at Love Competition Hall Saturday afternoon.

The Martlets, who dropped to 4-3 in league play, wore pink uniforms as part of their annual Shoot for the Cure game, which raises awareness and funds for breast cancer. Concordia's victory avenged a 63-58 loss to McGill just two days prior, on Concordia territory.

The victory moved Concordia (7-2) into a tie with Laval (7-0) atop the Quebec conference. The Stingers had an explosive first quarter, outscoring McGill 21-8, and that proved to be the margin of victory. They outscored McGill 16-13 in the second quarter and 17-12 in the third, before McGill rallied to win the final stanza 14-5.

"When you beat number two in the country (Concordia), they're gonna come back hungry," said McGill head coach Ryan Thorne. "We didn't have the same hunger, and they showed why they are that (highly) ranked. They're a good team, well-coached, and they play with fire. We didn't play with the same fire."

The Stingers had a 38-27 edge in rebounding, arguably an indicator of playing with intensity.

Sirah Diarra, a first-year transfer from Clemson, paced the Martlets with 14 points and nine rebounds. Injured sophomore Charlotte Clayton, who didn't start for the second straight outing after starting all 13 games earlier this season, ended up wityh 30 minutes of court time and tallied 11 points with six rebounds. Teammate Kamsi Ogbudibe also reached double digits with 10 points.

Strangely, both teams shot poorly with nearly identical numbers. Concordia shot 33.3 per cent from the floor, went 7-for-19 from the three-point arc and made 10 of 12 from the charity stripe. McGill shot 30.4, made 8-of-24 treys and drained 5-of-6 free-throws.

Up next for McGill is a home-and-home series with Bishop's, which sits fourth in the five-team RSEQ conference with a 2-8 record. The Martlets will host BU on Thursday (Jan. 24) st 6 p.m., before heading to Lennoxville for a rematch on Jan. 26 at 6 p.m.
