Guindon gobbles goose egg as McGill sends Voyageurs on a portage

MONTREAL -- Goaltender Louis-Philippe Guindon posted a 30-save shutout as No.9 ranked McGill blanked the visiting Laurentian University Voyageurs in OUA men's hockey at McConnell Arena, Friday.

It was the 13th consecutive victory for McGill over LU -- the first-ever shutout -- improving the Redmen lifetime record to 24-5-2 in 31 lifetime meetings since the series rivalry began in 1988.

Sophomore Michael Cramarossa of Markham, Ont., was credited with the game-winning tally on a power-play at 11:05 of the opening period. Defenceman Dominic Talbot-Tassi added an insurance marker just 42 seconds into the second period and now has a career scoring record of 33-119-152 overall, to move into a tie for second among the team's all-time top-scoring defencemen.

Talbot-Tassi, who recently launched his own hockey school in his hometown of Mascouche, Que., is now tied with former McGill great Gilles Hudon (45-107-152 in 130 games, 1980-1984) and 40 points behind the team record-holder Marc-Andre Dorion (38-154-192 in 174 games, 2008-2012). An engineering senior who hasn't missed a game over his McGill career, Talbot-Tassi has now suited up in 153 consecutive contests overall, four shy of the school ironman record of 157, held by Yves Beaucage (1980-84).

Guindon, a 6-foot-1, 183-pound science junior from St. Joseph du Lac, Que., collected his second whitewash of the regular season and his seventh in 86 career games overall. The 22-year-old kinesiology major improved his record to 13-8 on the season and 57-26 lifetime with McGill. He currently ranks second among OUA goalie leaders in wins, fifth in goals-against average (2.22), 10th in save percentage (.919), first in games played (21) and first in minutes (1216:14).

The Redmen, who had a 35-30 edge in shots on net,  went 1-for-6 on the power-play and snuffed out all three penalties taken.

Michael Giugovaz started between the pipes for Laurentian and took the loss, conceding two goals on 17 shots. He suffered an apparent lower body injury after stretching for a save midway through the game. He was replaced by Mackenzie Savard, who kicked aside all 18 shots faced over the final 27 minutes and 35 seconds.

The victory finally clinched a post-season berth for McGill, which improved to 13-5-4. The Redmen are tied with second-place Queen's (15-6-0) in the OUA East and seven points behind division-leading Ottawa (17-1-3). With six games remaining before playoffs, McGill will travel to Oshawa on Saturday for a Sunday (Jan. 20) matinee against fourth-place UOIT (12-6-4), which sits just two points back in the standings. The game is slated to be streamed live on OUA-TV at 12:30 p.m.
