MONTREAL -- Montrealer
Emilie Matte De Grasse scored a game-high 19 points as No. 7 ranked McGill swept the University of Ottawa 26-24, 25-14, 25-22 in RSEQ women's volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Friday night.
The Martlets, who improved their division-leading record to 9-2, had statistical advantages in kills (47-32), service aces (7-5), digs (43-41) and blocks (5-4).
Matte De Grasse, a fifth-year physical education senior, tallied 17 kills to go along with one service ace and a stuff block. The 5-foot-10 power-hitter added six digs and had a 2.4 passing ratio out of 3.
Claire Vercheval, a PhysEd junior from Ste. Julie, Que., registered 14 points -- on 13 kills and an ace -- in addition to nine digs.
"We did well today. Sometimes you have good games on defence or offence but today we did really well at both," said McGill head coach
Rachele Beliveau, whose troops hadn't played an official game in eight weeks over the exam and holiday break, although they did have three scrimmages. "We played together with good communication and support."
Other leading scorers for McGill were junior
Rowan Fletcher (9.5 points) of Montreal and freshman
Charlene Robitaille (7.5) of Mont St. Gregoire, Que.
"The first half was tight; we were behind but came back in the set," added Beliveau of the affair that took an hour and 17 minutes to play. "In the second we were in control and in the third set we were able to finish the game before they could catch up."
The Gee-Gees had two players in double figures, led by
Dana Bulloch with 10.5, and
Caroline LeMay (10).
McGill (9-2) hosts UQAM (4-7) on Sunday (Jan. 13) at Love Competition Hall, with tip-off slated for 1 p.m. Ottawa, which sits last in the six-team Quebec league with a 1-10 record, returns to the court on Jan. 19, when they travel to Sherbrooke (4-7).
