Stingers silence sold-out crowd to capture Carnival contest in overtime thriller

MONTREAL -- Dylan McCrory scored at 2:30 of sudden-death overtime as visiting Concordia rallied from a two-goal deficit to edge McGill 5-4 before a raucous crowd of 1,029 and a spirited pep band in OUA men's hockey, Friday, at the 17th annual Winter Carnival contest.

It marked the first time in school history that a game was sold-out in advance of the opening faceoff at McConnell Arena, which seats 950, excluding standing room. The Redmen have hosted larger crowds when the seating capacity was larger but none have sold out before the game.

McGill, which has dropped two of their last three Carnival games, now owns a 15-2 record in Carnival play, including a 5-1 mark against the Stingers, since since the annual event was re-introduced in 2003 after a two-decade absence.

The Redmen led 3-1 after the opening period on goals by Keanu Yamamoto, Jerome Verrier and Guillaume Gauthier. But Concordia roared back to narrow the gap to 4-3 after two, then tied the score with just over five minutes remaining when defenceman Philippe Charbonneau struck paydirt to force a 3-on-3 overtime session.

McGill had two glorious opportunities to win it in the extra period, with back-to-back breakaways by Samuel Tremblay and Jerome Verrier before the Stingers transitioned back up ice to net the winning tally.

Unlike the vast majority of the 220 lifetime confrontations against each other, this game featured only three minor penalties, with two of the infractions overlapping against McGill, which led to Philippe Sanche's 5-on-3 power-play marker,  reducing McGill's lead to 4-3 at 17:33 of the middle stanza. His goal came just 44 seconds after Frederic Gamelin had put McGill ahead 4-2 with a shorthanded marker at 16:49 of the second stanza.

Jean-Philippe Beaulieu led Concordia with a pair of goals and an assist, putting the Stingers ahead 1-0 only 82 seconds into the game and narrowing McGill's lead to 3-2 at 8:20 of the second period.

The Stingers, which improved to 101-105-14 lifetime against McGill, had a 43-37 edge in shots. Making his collegiate debut for Concordia was six-foot, 180-pound freshman netminder Anthony Dumont-Bouchard who made 33 saves for his first career victory. McGill junior Louis-Philippe Guindon registered 38 saves in a losing cause.

Concordia was 1-for-2 on the power-play while the Redmen were 0-for-1. McGill is now tied with Carleton for second in the 20-team OUA conference with five shorthanded goals. UQTR leads the league in that department with six.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, with McGill (11-5-4) traveling to the nation's capital to confront Carleton (12-4-4) at 7 p.m., while Concordia (11-7-1) will host first-place Ottawa (16-1-2) at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be streamed live for free on OUA-TV.

FACES IN THE CROWD: Spotted in the crowd was Dr. Jay McMullan, who patrolled the Redmen blueline in the early 1980s, along with former McGill team captains Ken Covo, Mike Nelson and Patrick Delisle-Houde, who now serves as the Montreal Canadiens fitness coordinator... Also in attendance was Miranda Baillie, a cognitive science junior from Florida who happens to be the fourth generation of Baillie royalty to attend McGill. Her great grandfather Don Baillie was the first Canadian quarterback to throw the forward pass, accomplishing the feat in a 1921 McGill football game against Syracuse at Molson Stadium. Her grandfather, Charlie Baillie, is a McGill Sports Hall of Fame inductee who coached the football Redmen to the 1987 Vanier Cup national championship and her father Steven Baillie, played and coached football at McGill.
