OTTAWA -- Left-fielder
Jack Pantalena of Easton, Conn., had five runs batted in to lead McGill in a 23-1 rout over the Ottawa Gee-Gees to open a Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association doubleheader, Sunday, at RGCT Park in the nation's capital.
Despite the mercy rule being applied, which shortened the game to only five innings, McGill's offensive output established league and school records for most runs scored in a regular season game. It surpassed the old CIBA Northern Conference mark set by Concordia in a 21-2 decision over John Abbott College on Sept. 17, 2009. The previous McGill high in the regular season was a 20-4 conquest over John Abbott on Sept. 26, 2013. The all-time McGill record, set in an exhibition game, occurred a 27-2 decision over the Montreal Warriors, a U-19 team, on Aug. 31, 2016.
The defending four-time national champion Redmen outhit Ottawa 17-3 and took advantage of 13 walks, one hit batsmen and four errors committed by the Gee-Gees. McGill scored six runs in the first inning, one in the second, eight in the third, six in the fourth and two more in the fifth before the contest was called.
Pantalena, an economics senior who was hitting seventh in the batting order, went 2-for-3 at the plate, with two runs scored. The six-foot, 190-pound outfielder smacked a bases-loaded double in the first inning and added a two-run single in the third to make the score 13-0.
Leading the hit parade with three apiece was
Jonathan Duforest, a physical education junior from Kirkland, Que., and
Domenic DeFelice, an economics junior from Richmond, Mass. Other Redmen with two hits each were Pantalena and
Sasha Lagarde, an education junior from Pierrefonds, Que., in addition to freshmen
Chester Dixon of Edina, Minn., and
James Mulvaney of Indian Land, S.C.
McGill starter
Shane Curran scattered two hits over four innings for the victory. The economics senior from Vancouver, B.C., allowed no runs while walking four and striking out three. Rookie
Zach Finkelstein of Nashua, N.H., tossed one inning of one-hit relief out of the bullpen, giving up one unearned run in the process.
Matthew Brown took the loss for Ottawa. He allowed three hits and 12 runs (seven earned) over 2.1 innings, walking eight, hitting one and striking out none.
McGill, which improved to 4-1 in league play, will try to sweep the winless Gee-Gees (0-2) in today's second game, slated for a 3:15 pm start.
