GAME NOTES: McGill head coach Peter Smith was unable to make the game due to a family committment. In his absence, associate coach Alyssa Cecere took over as bench boss... It marked the second straight year that the Catamounts came away with a 3-2 victory over McGill as UVM improved their overall record against McGill to 3-8-1 since their first meeting in 1998.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Martlets jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Kate Devries goal at 5:44 in the first period. Kellyane Lecours and Valerie Audet drew assists on the play.
• Saana Valkama tied the game with 1:58 left in the opening period on a feed from Anna Erickson.
• Vermont took the lead in the second on its power play when Kristina Shanahan received a pass in the slot from Theresa Schafzahl and wristed a shot past goaltender Tricia Deguire with 15:52 left in the second period. Ève-Audrey Picard had the secondary assist.
• McGill's Lea Dumais tied the game at 2-2 early in the third period, converting passes from Jade Downie-Landry and Nicole Howlett. It was her fourth goal in as many games.
• At 9:25 of the final period, Kolowrat fired the game-winner on a slap shot from the point that beat Deguire blocker side for the game-winning tally.
• Melissa Black (6 saves) opened the game, Blanka Škodová (5 saves) played the middle frame, and Sierra Natzke (9 saves) closed out the exhibition in net
• Tricia Deguire kicked aside 25 of 28 shots in a losing cause.

WHAT'S NEXT

It was the first loss of the preseason for the Martlets (4-1), who play next against Les Canadiens of the Canadian Women's Hockey League on Friday, Oct. 5 at Arena Michel Normandin, in a game slated to start at 7:30 p.m.

The Catamounts (1-0) begin the regular season Saturday (Oct. 6) when they host UConn for a Hockey East matchup. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m.
