COTE St. LUC, QUE. -- McGill exploded for eight runs in the second inning en route to a 13-3 victory over Ottawa to sweep the Gee-Gees in a Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association doubleheader at Gary Carter Field, Saturday. McGill also cruised to a lopsided win the opener with a 13-0 decision. Both games were shortened to five innings as the mercy rule was applied.
The Redmen, who had a 13-5 edge in hits, scored once in the first, eight in the second, three in the fourth and one in the fifth. Ottawa tallied all three of their runs in the third inning.
Catcher
Michael Gaudioso and shortstop
Troy Shepherd sparked the McGill offence. Gaudioso was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and scored twice. Shepherd went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored.
McGill starter
Thomas Mienkowski struck out seven, walked two and scattered five hits for a complete game victory. He allowed three runs in his five innings of work before the game was called.
Five different players had one hit apiece for the last-place Gee-Gees, who dropped to 3-12.
Ottawa starter
Anselmo Selotario didn't survive the second inning and took the loss. He gave up nine runs (six earned) on eight hits and a pair of walks.
McGill, which leads the five-team CCBA Northern Division with a 12-3 record and only one regular season game remaining before playoffs, against Concordia on Oct. 1.
The Redmen, who own a 23-6-3 record overall, have also two final exhibition games left to play. They headed across the border immediately after the game for a Sunday doubleheader in Glens Falls, N.Y. McGill plays Hudson Valley Community ollege at 1:30 p.m., followed by Adirondack Community College at 4:30 p.m.
