Hockey Martlets quell Queen's, capture Old Four tourney

MONTREAL – The McGill University women's hockey team had four different goal scorers and cruised to a 4-1 victory over Queen's to capture the first annual Old Four Tournament at McConnell Arena, Sunday.

It was McGill's fifth straight win over Queen's since a 3-2 overtime loss on Sept. 20, 2014 and improved their record to 17-6-1 against the Gaels since the national women's hockey championship was established in 1997.

McGill, which improved to 4-0 on the season, had a dominating 32-14 edge in shots. They led 2-0 after the first period and 4-1 after two, then battled to scoreless third period.

"It was another solid performance," said Martlets head coach Peter Smith. "We want to be a relentless team to play against and I thought we were. We played fast and managed the puck well. Lots of positives, it's great when you have everyone going and that's what we've had every game thus far. We've had a good buy in from the whole team. We've been able to implement things from practice right into our games at a much higher pace than we did last year."

Shana Walker and Marika Labrecque potted goals less than three minutes apart, scoring at 12:42 and 15:22 of the opening period. And the Martlets almost had a carbon copy second period, when Lea Dumais and Frederique Gauthier pounced for goals at 13:33 and 15:44 of the middle stanza.

Just 54 seconds later, the Gaels finally responded when Katrina Manoukarakis connected for a power-play marker to close out the scoring. It snapped McGill's shutout streak at 216 minutes and 37 seconds since the start of the season.

Queen's was 1-for-3 on the power-play, while McGill was 0-for-3.

Goaltender Tricia Deguire made 13 saves to improve her preseason record to 3-0. Stephanie Pascal, her counterpart at the other end of the ice, had 28 saves and took the loss.

Up next for McGill is a cross-border confrontation against the NCAA's Vermont Catamonts in Burlington, Vt., on Sept. 29 at 4 p.m.
