Last place UdeM rallies in extra innings to snap McGill baseball home win streak

COTE ST. LUC, Que. -- William Frappier-LaPointe was 3-for-4, including an RBI double in the eighth inning as the last-place Université de Montréal rallied for a 4-2 upset over division-leading McGill, Thursday, in Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association play at Gary Carter Field.

The result snapped McGill's three-year, 21-game win streak at home in regular season play. The last home setback for the Redmen was also against UdeM, a 6-2 decision on Sept. 14, 2015.

It was a heartbreaker for McGill (5-3), which took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning. The Redmen then watched as Montreal (1-4) won their first game of the season by forcing extra innings with runs in the fifth and sixth, before adding two more in the eighth.

The game was tied at two in the top of the eighth when the first two batters walked, the followed by Frappier-LaPointe's run-scoring double to right on the first pitch, to score catcher James Turcotte-Chabot. The visitors added an insurance run when shortstop Gerrard Allerhuis walked and a subsequent pickoff attempt resulted in an error by first baseman Jared Kersh, allowing Thomas Patrice to score. It was McGill's fifth error of the contest.

Kersh led McGill offensively, going 2-for-4 at the plate.

UdeM starter Antoine Beaudoin went four and a third innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. He walked three and striking out five. Tommy Grenier threw 1.2 innings in relief out of the bullpen, followed by Alexandre Brunelle, who earned the victory., allowing just one walk over two innings.

Cole Millinger started for McGill and was one of five Redmen pitchers. He went four innings, allowing one run on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts. He was relieved by Shane Curran, Thomas Mienkowski, Andre Lagarde and Zach Salsburg-Frank, who pitched the final inning and was saddled with the loss after allowing one hit and two runs.

McGill will only have a short time to refocus as they will host Carleton (2-1) in a Saturday doubleheader matinee against Carleton, beginning at 12 noon.
