NCAA's Bearcats pounce on Redmen in college hoops


MONTREAL -- Jarron Cumberland, a junior guard from Wilmington, Ohio scored 17 points, as the University of Cincinnati Bearcats pounced on McGill 79-53 in a cross-border men's basketball preseason contest at Love Competition Hall, Tuesday.

The Bearcats, who topped the 12-team American Athletic Conference last year with a 16-2 record, led McGill from wire-to-wire. They jumped into an 11-0 lead before the host team broke the ice with 6:28 remaining in the opening quarter. Cincinnati took a 16-6 advantage into the second quarter, where both teams tallied 22 points apiece, which put the visitors ahead 38-28 at halftime. The Bearcats outscored McGill 17-10 in the third and 24-15 in the final stanza.

Other leading scorers for Cincinnati included Cane Broome 14) and Rashawn Fredericks (12).

Senior Alex Paquin Candiac, Que., paced the Redmen with 21 points on 8-for-19 shooting. The second-year transfer from American University in Washington, was 2-for-6 from three-point range and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. Paquin, a six-foot point-guard, played a team-high 32 minutes and added three rebounds with an assist.

He was one of only seven McGill players to score points, along with senior Noah Daoust (11) of Dorval, Que., and freshman Brennan Laidman (7).of Kingston, Ont. Teammates Sam Jenkins, Levi Londole and Jamal Mayali had four points apiece, while veteran Avery Cadogan potted four.

The Bearcats held a commanding 29-15 advantage in turnovers, which they converted into 21-6 payoff on the scoreboard. They also led 32-23 in rebounds, 9-5 in steals and 6-1 in blocks. Cincinnati shot 43.1 per cent from the field, 33.3 from the arc and 73.3 from the line. The Redmen connected on 35.2, 22.7 and 71.4, respectively.

Cincinnati, which concluded their three-game Canadian excursion at 2-1, opened the trip with an 85-57 victory over Ottawa (Aug. 5), followed by an 86-67 loss at Carleton (Aug. 6).

McGill, which dropped to 0-2 in preseason play against NCAA opponents, will host the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on Thursday (Aug. 9) with a 7 p.m. tip-off at Love Competition Hall. The Redmen will then host Vermont on Aug. 12 and Duke (at Place Bell) on Aug. 19. Tickets are still available online for Vermont and Duke.
