MONTREAL --
Jeane Lassen, a McGill University graduate and Olympic weightlifter, has been inducted to the Yukon Sport Hall of Fame. The 37-year-old native of Whitehorse in the Yukon was inducted along with Olympic cyclist
Zach Bell during a celebration of sport excellence ceremony held at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre in Whitehorse on May 4.
Lassen earned a bachelor of education from McGill in 2004, majoring in teaching English as a second language. In 2006, she became the first Canadian woman in 17 years to medal at the world championships after capturing a silver in the clean-and-jerk in addition to a bronze in the overall 69-kilogram weight class. A gold medalist at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and the 2008 Pan American championships in Callao, Peru, she also won bronze at the 2006 world championships in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), was a 15-time medalist at various world university championships and finished fifth at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
"These awards recognize the dedication to sport and competition from our athletes," Minister of Sport
John Streicker told the audience. "This is not achieved overnight – the athletes here today have spent years training and preparing and competing – and that is what we are here to recognize this evening."
