HALIFAX -- All-Canadian Dele Ogundokun of Hamilton, Ont., scored 17 points as No.3 McGill easily defeated sixth-seeded UNB 88-57 to open the quarter-final round at the U SPORTS Final Eight men's basketball championship, Thursday, at ScotiaBank Centre.

It was the 10th consecutive win for the Redmen, who advance to the semifinal round on Saturday at 1 p.m. (Eastern) against Calgary, which edged Brock 78-76 in another quarter-final. The McGill-Calgary matchup, slated to be televised on Sportsnet 360, will give the Redmen a chance to avenge an 81-61 preseason loss at Calgary on Oct. 5, 2017. That was the first meeting between these teams since March 17, 2016 when the Dinos squeaked past McGill 72-69 in a national quarter-final.

The Varsity Reds and Redmen were knotted at 16-16 after the opening quarter, then McGill took control. The Quebec conference champions overwhelmed the Atlantic champs 29-14 in the second quarter to take a 45-30 lead into halftime. The Redmen then outpaced UNB 21-12 in the third and 22-15 in the final stanza.

Ogundokun, named as McGill's player of the game,  was one of five Redmen players to reach double digits in scoring, along with starters Sebastian Beckett (13), Jenning Leung (12), Alex Paquin (12) and Noah Daoust, who tallied 11 off the bench.

UNB Game MVP Javon Masters led the Varsity Reds with 19, while teammate Tyrell Leotaud contributed 10.

"It doesn't matter who scores, as long as we score," said Redmen bench boss David DeAveiro, the five-time RSEQ coach of the year. "It's much harder to guard a team that's got more than one or two weapons when you've got five to 10. That's something we've been preaching all year."

But it was on the defensive end where they made the greatest impact. McGill, which entered the tournament with the nation's second-best defence, showed their mettle. They held the second-best offence to just 57 points on just 31.3 per cent shooting, while forcing 22 turnovers.

Leung opened the scoring with a corner triple as the Redmen began the game on a 6-0 run. McGill deployed a full-court press early and often and it was effective. The press limited the touches of Masters, the U SPORTS all-time leading scorer, and forced him into three first-quarter turnovers.

"All season long we pressured teams and we thought that might not be a good idea with Masters because he's so good with the ball," said DeAveiro. "But we decided to stick with our identity on defence and try to wear him down. Then in the half-court, we wanted him to see as many McGill bodies as possible every time he touched the ball."

After burning a timeout, the Varsity Reds reeled off seven-straight points to pull ahead. However, Sam Jenkins and Ogundokun responded with back-to-back threes to give McGill a 13-9 lead. UNB ended the quarter on a 7-3 run thanks to five points by Jesse Kendall to tie it up after one.

"We started out flat, but we got into a little bit of a flow," said Masters, who recorded a game-high 19 points on 7-of-16 shooting. "Their (McGill) pressure really got into us. We made that an emphasis in our game plan to try and neutralize their pressure and we didn't do a really good job of it."

The Redmen used an 11-1 run to pull away 27-17 in the early moments of the second. Frustration started to set in on the UNB bench, as head coach Brent Baker was called for a technical foul for complaining to the referees about calls. The technical did little to inspire his team, as McGill shot a blistering 57.1 per cent in the quarter and took command with a 45-30 lead at halftime.

McGill went to the line 38 times in the game and came away with 25 freebies, compared to 20 attempts by UNB that produced 13 points. In an extremely rare scenario, during one deadball in-bound play, one UNB player was called for three consecutive holding infractions

"We've been here many times. We have a veteran group and each year we've gotten better at Nationals due to our experience," Ogundokun said. "This year with all of the experience, I think we're over the hump now and it's time to break new barriers."

McGill shot 44.8 per cent from the floor (26/58), with a sizzling 45.8 from downtown (11/24). The V-Reds shot 31.2 (20/64) and 17.4 (4/23), respectively.

The Redmen held a considerable 22-13 advantage in turnovers forced, which translated into a 28-5 edge in points off turnovers. UNB had a 39-36 margin in rebounds.

UNB faces Brock Saturday morning in the consolation semifinal at 10 a.m. Eastern.

HALIFAX (U SPORTS) – Grâce à une performance défensive exceptionnelle, les Redmen de l'Université McGill ont dominé les Varsity Reds de UNB par la marque de 88-57 lors du premier quart de finale du 8 ultime de basketball masculin U SPORTS, jeudi après-midi au Centre Banque Scotia.

Les Redmen, champions du RSEQ et troisièmes favoris de la compétition, atteignent le carré d'as canadien pour une deuxième année consécutive. Ils se frotteront à Calgary ou Brock lors de la première demi-finale prévue pour samedi à 13h HE / 10h HP.
 
Les Varsity Reds, champions de la conférence SUA et sixièmes favoris ce week-end, poursuivront quant à eux leur parcours du côté consolation du tableau. Ils seront de retour sur le terrain samedi à 10h HE / 7h HP.
 
Le match d'ouverture du tournoi national opposait la deuxième meilleure unité offensive au pays en saison régulière (UNB – 89,8 points par rencontre) à l'unité défensive classée deuxième au Canada (McGill – 66,0 points par match).
 
Suite à un premier quart qui s'est terminé par une égalité de 16-16, McGill a dominé la deuxième période par 29 à 14 pour se forger une confortable avance de 45-30 à la mi-temps. Les champions québécois en ont rajouté au troisième engagement, qu'ils ont remporté par 21 à 12, pour mettre la rencontre hors de portée.
 
Le vétéran meneur de jeu Dele Ogundokun a été élu joueur par excellence du match pour les gagnants grâce à une récolte de 17 points, trois rebonds et deux vols de ballon en 28 minutes de jeu. Ses coéquipiers Sebastian Beckett (13), Jenning Leung (12), Alex Paquin (12) et Noah Daoust (11) ont également marqué au moins 10 points chacun dans la victoire.
 
Du côté de UNB, Javon Masters, le meilleur marqueur au pays lors du calendrier régulier avec une moyenne de 24,5 points par sortie, a mené la charge avec 19 points, alors que Tyrell Leotaud en inscrivait 10.
 
McGill a réussi 44,8% de ses tirs du plancher (26 en 58) et 45,8% de ses tentatives de la ligne de trois points (11 en 24), comparativement à des taux de succès de 31,3% (20 en 64) et 17,4% (4 en 23) pour ses adversaires des Maritimes. Les Montréalais ont également visité la ligne des lancers francs à 38 reprises (25 en 38) contre seulement 20 occasions (13 en 20) pour UNB, en plus de forcer les V-Reds à commettre 22 revirements.
 
« Pour nous, il importe peu de savoir qui inscrit des points, en autant qu'on marque, a dit l'entraîneur-chef des Redmen, David DeAveiro. C'est beaucoup plus difficile de défendre contre une équipe qui compte sur de nombreux joueurs pouvant marquer avec régularité, au lieu de seulement un ou deux. C'est ce que nous avons répété à nous joueurs pendant toute la saison. »
 
Leung a entamé le match avec un panier de trois points du coin du terrain alors que McGill s'emparait d'une avance rapide de 6-0. À l'autre bout du court, les Redmen ont été agressifs en défensive du début à la fin, particulièrement contre Masters, victime de trois revirements au premier quart.
 
« Nous n'étions pas certains que mettre de la pression fonctionnerait contre Masters car il est tellement bon avec le ballon, a dit DeAveiro. Mais nous avons décidé de ne pas changer un système défensif qui avait si bien fonctionné pour nous cette saison. Au milieu du terrain, nous voulions qu'il ait des joueurs sur lui dès qu'il recevait le ballon. »
 
Après avoir demandé un temps d'arrêt, les Varsity Reds ont répliqué avec sept points de suite pour prendre les devants. Deux paniers de trois points consécutifs ont permis aux Redmen de reprendre un avantage de 13-9, mais le premier quart devait prendre fin avec une égalité de 16-16 suite à cinq points de Jesse Kendall pour UNB.
 
« Nous avons pris un certain rythme après un lent départ, a dit Masters, qui a terminé le duel avec sept réussites sur 16 tirs du plancher. Par contre, la pression exercée par McGill a eu raison de nous. Contrer leur pression faisait pourtant partie de notre plan de match, mais nous n'avons pas réussi à le faire. »
 
Tôt au deuxième quart, les Redmen ont connu une séquence de 11 à 1 pour porter leur avance à 27-17. McGill devait réussir pas moins de 57,1% de ses tirs au cours de l'engagement pour rentrer au vestiaire avec un avantage de 15 points à la pause.
 
En avance par 24 après 30 minutes de jeu, les vainqueurs ont creusé l'écart à 30 tôt au quatrième quart.
 
« Nous avons participé au championnat canadien à plusieurs reprises ces dernières années. Nous formons un groupe expérimenté et à chaque année nous nous rendons plus loin dans le tournoi, a dit Ogundokun. Je crois que cette année pourrait être la bonne et que nous pourrions atteindre de nouveaux sommets. »
