QUEBEC CITY --
Alex Paquin posted a game-high 18 points as the No.6 ranked McGill men's basketball team cruised to a 75-58 road victory at Laval, Thursday at the Centre PEPS. It was the sixth straight victory for the streaking Redmen who lead the RSEQ conference with a 13-2 record and one game left to play.
The Redmen have now claimed seven consecutive meetings with Laval and 23 of the last 27 confrontations. McGill boasts a 68-56 head-to-head record, dating all the way back to the 1965-66 season.
McGill led 18-15 after the first quarter, 36-28 at halftime and 58-40 after three. Laval out-pointed the Redmen 18-17 in the final stanza.
Paquin shot a superb 7-for-11 from the field, including 1-for-1 from three-point range. He was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line and collected four rebounds along withfour assists.
Paquin was one of four Redmen to reach double digits in scoring.
Sam Jenkins and
Daniel Pieper each pocketed a dozen points, while
Noah Daoust had 10. Veteran
Dele Ogundokun was held to nine points and two rebounds.
Leading Laval was
Frantson Demosthene, who registered a "double-double" with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Teammates
Alexandre Leclerc and
Alain Bernard contributed 11 points apiece.
McGill put up a whopping 73 attempts and made 27 of them to shoot 37 per cent from the field. They went 9-for-28 from the arc and 12-for-19 from the line.
Laval replied with 65 attempts but shot only 33.8 per cent from the field. They were worse from long-distance, making just three of 19 attempts, and drained only 11 of 19 freebies.
The game featured 38 turnovers, split equally and the Redmen had a 46-36 advantage in rebounds.
McGill (13-2) will honour five graduating seniors on Saturday when they close out their regular season schedule at 3 p.m. against last-place UQAM (2-13) at Love Competition Hall. Seniors scheduled to be recognized before the game are expected to be
Jenning Leung,
Daniel Pieper,
Dele Ogundokun,
Sebastian Beckett and
François Bourque.
A victory would would mark the team's 14th of the season and would match head coach
David DeAveiro's personal best with the team, equaling the 14-2 campaign accomplished in 2013-14. That was the highest regular season win total for McGill since 1976-77 when then bench boss
Butch Staples guided the Redmen to a 14-1 record.
REDMEN RAP: At 88.6 points per game, McGill 's offence currently ranks fourth in the nation behind UBC (94.2), UNB (90.4) and Lethbridge (89.8)... The omnipotent Carleton Ravens are ranked fifth, averaging 88.5 points per game... The Redmen are averaging 10.0 treys per game, which ranks third behind Windsor (11.4) and Fraser Valley (10.3).
