Relentless Robitaille rules as Ottawa ousted from playoff berth by Martlet volleyballers

OTTAWA -- Team captain Myriam Robitaille of Terrebonne, Que., tallied a game-high 16.5 points and setter Thara Dawoodjee of Ottawa was credited with a game-high 27 assists as No.9 ranked McGill swept Ottawa 25-21, 25-12 and 25-22 to wrap up the regular season of RSEQ women's volleyball, at Montpetit Hall on Saturday.

The loss put an end to the Gee-Gees' playoff hopes as Ottawa (4-15) needed to win their final two games to catch UQAM (6-13) for the fourth and final playoff berth. McGill swept the season series 4-0 and now holds a 6-2 regular season record in head-to-head meetings since Ottawa joined the Quebec league last year.

McGill had a 35-32 edge in kills, a 12-3 margin in blocks, a 36-30 advantage in digs and an 11-8 difference in service aces.

"We were much improved offensively and on our serve receive," said Martlets head coach Rachele Beliveau, who was disappointed with the team's performance in a shocking 3-0 loss to fourth-place UQAM on Friday. "Both Robitaille and Dawoodjee had strong games today. Robitaille is usually double-teamed but only had one blocker on her for most of the game today, so we kept giving her the ball. She was also very efficient in both serving and blocking. Dawoodjee was feeding her the ball really well and played a good aggressive game."

Robitaille, a six-foot middle-blocker, earned her points with 10 kills, four service aces, one stuff block and three assisted blocks. The 23-year-old French literature senior also had three digs and pair assists.

Dawoodjee , who is ranked fourth in the RSEQ conference with 7.87 assists per set, also registered three kills, a pair of aces, two assisted blocks and six digs.

Teammate Elisabeth Perrault, a sophomore middle-blocker from Montreal, recorded six kills, an ace, one stuff block, an assisted block and a pair of digs. Erika Cournoyer and Claire Vercheval each scored 7.5 points. Cournoyer, a six-foot middle blocker from Longueuil, Que., registered four kills, two stuff blocks and three assisted blocks, along with five digs. Vercheval, a sophomore power hitter from Ste. Julie, Que., had four kills, two aces and a pair of blocks, plus four digs.

Rowan Fletcher, a sophomore right-side hitter from Montreal, posted a game-high nine digs, to go along with had five kills, one stuff block and two assisted blocks.

The Gee-Gees were led by Kaly Soro, who collected 9.5 points.

The second-place Martlets (14-6) now have two weeks of rest and preparation before opening their best-of-three semifinal series against third-place Laval (12-6) on Friday, March 2.

"We have to approach the playoffs the way we di today," warned Beliveau. "More calm and big on offence. We're an offensive-minded team and although the passing game sometimes doesn't go the way we want, we still have to be aggressive and hit relentlessly."

The RSEQ regular season comes to a conclusion when Ottawa (4-15) visits league-leading Montreal (17-2) on Sunday (Feb. 18).
