Cool Hand Cadogan collects 26 as Redmen hoopsters harpoon Gaiters

LENNOXVILLE, Que -- Avery Cadogan of Winnipeg scored a game-high 26 points as visiting McGill outlasted Bishop's 68-56 in RSEQ men's basketball at the Mitchell Gymnasium, Saturday.

It avenged a 79-69 setback to BU on Nov. 15 and was McGill's 13th win in the last 15 confrontations against the Gaiters. The loss dropped Bishop's to 3-3 while the Redmen improved to 3-2 in conference play at the midway month-long break for exams and holidays.

Cadogan's performance was a career high in regular season play for the 6-foot-4 guard, who also tallied 30 points in an 85-79 preseason victory over the Kent State Golden Flashes on Aug. 14, 2017.

A 24-year-old economics senior who played a game-high 38 minutes, Cadogan shot a sizzling 10-for-14 from the floor, including an impressive 6-for-8 performance from three-point range. He also pulled down five rebounds to go along with four blocked shots and three steals.

McGill, which opened a 10-0 run to start the game. led 20-15 after the opening quarter. The Gaiters fought back to even the count at 28-28 heading into halftime but McGill controlled the second half, winning the third quarter 17-14 and also the final stanza 23-14.

BU out-rebounded McGill 53-37 but turned the ball over 25 times to the visitor's 13. McGill converted that into 30 points. Bishop's was only 7-for-17 from the charity stripe, while the Redmen went 7-for-11.

Point-guard Alex Paquin contributed 19 points, including 13 in the final quarter. The six-foot senior added six rebounds, four assists and a half-dozen steals in 35 minutes of court time.

Teammate Anthony Fisiru, a starting freshman from Gatineau, Que., added nine points, six rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists.

Four Gaiters scored in double figures led by Nervens Demosthene of Terrebonne, Que., who scored 16. Chipping in with 10 points apiece was Kevin Davis of Baltimore and a pair of Montrealers --  Abdul Kamane and Joany Castor-Thadal. Kamane pulled down 10 rebounds for a "double-double".

McGill, which had a decisive 14-6 margin in steals and a 7-6 edge in blocked shots, shot 37.1 per cent from the field (26/70) and made nine of 36 attempts from beyond the arc. The Gaiters shot 34.4 from the floor (22/64) and went 5-for-23 from downtown.

McGill, which sits second in the five-team RSEQ conference with a 3-2 record, now goes on a three-week hiatus and will return to the court Dec. 28-29. when they are scheduled to play Guelph and Brandon at UQAM's Olga Hrycak Classic tournament.

Bishop's (3-3) will play next on Jan. 10 in Montreal when they face Concordia.
