Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Matthew McCarthey

Captain Verrier leads Redmen romp over Lakers

MONTREAL -- Team captain Jerome Verrier of Drummondville Que., potted a pair of goals and added a helper as McGill dominated the visiting Nipissing University Lakers 7-1 in OUA men's hockey at McConnell Arena, Friday night.

McGill outshot Nipissing by a whopping 56-19 margin and the result avenged a 3-2 loss at Nipissing last weekend as the Redmen improved to 22-5 in 27 lifetime meetings.

Verrier, a 5-foot-11 centre, opened the scoring at 8:03 of the first and netted his second marker at 18:31 of the middle period that put his side up 6-0. The economics senior also assisted on the game-winner, a power-play marker scored by junior Guillaume Gauthier, that made it 2-0 at 12:41 of the first. Verrier upped his season totals to 5-10-15 in 16 contests.

Gauthier, who also had a three-point soiree, now leads the team in scoring with five goals and 18 points in 16 games, matching his single-season best point total accomplished in 24 games last season.

Other McGill marksmen included junior Samuel Tremblay of St. Hubert, Que., freshman Jordan Fournier of Dorval, Que., senior Frederic Gamelin of St. Polycarpe, Que., and defenceman Nikolas Brouillard, who leads the Redmen with 13 goals overall and 11 markers in 14 regular season games. The 5-foot-11, 168-pound physical education sophomore tops all U SPORTS blueliners in goals and needs five more to tie the McGill single-season record for most league goals by a rearguard set by Samuel Labrecque three years ago.

Lakers forward Colby Tower of Troy, N.S., scored the sole marker for his team, spoiling a shutout bid by McGill sophomore Louis-Philip Guindon at 12:42 of the final stanza to reduce the gap to 6-1.

Guindon made 18 saves as his record improved to 9-6 on the season. The 6-foot-1 junior from St. Joseph du Lac, Que., leads OUA goalies in wins and minutes played (918:36). He is ranked seventh in goals-against average (2.29) and 11th in save percentage (.917).

Nipissing netminder Domenic Graham blocked 49 of 56 shots faced in a losing effort as his record fell to 3-5.

The Redmen went 1-for-6 on the power play and the PP unit has now struck pay-dirt in seven consecutive games, producing 10 markers in that span as the team's success rate has moved to 10th in the league at 17.6 per cent. The PK unit successfully killed all four penalties and is now ranked fourth in the 20-team OUA conference with a success rate of 87.5 per cent.

Both teams play their final game before the exam and holiday break on Saturday (Dec. 1). McGill, which improved to 9-4-3 and sits five points back of division-leading Ottawa (12-1-2), will host Royal Military College (4-12-1) at McConnell Arena, with the opening faceoff set for 7 p.m. Across town, Nipissing (4-11-0) will confront Concordia (8-6-1) at 7:30 p.m.
