MONTREAL --
Adryanna Dorismond-Rodrigue from Longueuil, Que., scored a game-high 22.5 points as the Université de Montréal defeated No.7 ranked McGill 3-1 in RSEQ women's volleyball at the Centre CEPSUM, Friday night. McGill took the first set 26-24 but the Carabins rallied to win the next three, 25-22, 25-13 and 26-24, respectively.
The Carabins (6-3) evened the head-to-head season series at 2-2, including a 1-1 mark in exhibition play. it was the final game of the semester for McGill, which dropped to 8-2 in the Quebec league and leads second-place Montreal by four points.
Montreal's smothering defence had a lopsided 86-41 advantage in digs and an 18-9 margin in stuff blocks. On offence, the Carabins clung to a 44-38 edge in kills and equaled the Martlets 14-14 in service aces.
"They were little more dominant. We served well, they served well, we were very comparable, but they hit a lot of balls compared to us," said McGill head coach
Rachele Beliveau. "Montreal played one of their best games this year."
Starting middle-blocker
Mila Krunic was sidelined with an undisclosed injury, which prompted the Martlets to move left-side power-hitter
Emilie Matte De Grasse of Montreal to the middle and
Ariane Lavoie-Boutin of La Prairie, Que., filled in as the outside hitter, ending up with 10 points on the scoresheet.
De Grasse, a 5-foot-10 senior, led McGill with 15.5 points, collecting 10 kills, three aces and 2.5 blocks.
Rowan Fletcher, a junior from Ottawa added nine kills and a pair of aces, along with four digs.
Dorismond-Rodrigue led the Carabins with 18 kills, two aces, and five assisted blocks. She also had 17 digs. Carabins teammates
Marie-Alex Bélanger and
Clemence Provost-Lussier followed with 14.5 and 10.5 points, respectively.
Montreal closes out the semester against UQAM (4-4) on Nov. 25. McGill is off until after the Christmas break and will resume play at the Queen's Invitational Tournament on Jan, 4-6 in Kingston, Ont., before returning to regular season action against Ottawa on Jan. 11 at Love Competition Hall.
"We have done pretty well considering the injuries we've had. After the first half of the season, we will be in first place and we haven't played once with a full lineup," noted Beliveau, whose troops have posted an impressive 17-7 record overall. "We have been consistent since the beginning of the season and I'm happy with what I've seen."
