MONTREAL -- Defenceman
Alexandra Paradis scored the game-winner on a power-play midway through the second period and that held up as No.2 Montreal handed sixth-ranked McGill a 2-1 setback, their first loss in RSEQ women's hockey at the Centre CEPSUM, Sunday afternoon.
"The pace of the game was slow. lets's not pull any punches, We weren't sharp," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith, whose troops were outshot 28-21. "There are two components to our game that we do well. We play fast and with structure and unfortunately, we had neither of those components going today.
"We didn't play a particularly fast game and our puck support was not where it needed to be, especially after playing the second game in two days, when you have to adhere to a structured system. But I suppose having some adversity at this time of the year is not necessarily a bad thing. I think this was the first time we've trailed in our six league games. We're a solid hockey team but just didn't play to our potential today. It will be good to see how the team reacts to it."
Carabins forward
Alexandra Boulanger opened the scoring at 10:44 of the first period, ending goaltender
Tricia Deguire's marathon shutout sequence at 231 minutes and 23 seconds. It was the third longest in McGill history, behind the U SPORTS regular season shutout sequence record of 363:09, established by McGill's
Charline Labonté between Oct. 13/07 and Nov.4/07. Labonté was also part of a tandem with
Gabrielle Smith that posted a shutout sequence of 258:40 in the 2008-09 season.
McGill freshman
Laura Jardin tied the score at 1-1 with her first career marker at 2:08 of the second period, setting the stage for Paradis. Jardin is the 10th different McGill player to register a goal this season, all of them forwards.
Rookie goaltender
Aube Racine registered 20 saves for the victory, improving her record to 3-0. Deguire made 26 saves in a losing cause as her record fell to 5-1. The physical education junior from Sherbrooke saw her league-leading goals-against average "balloon" to 0.67 while her save percentage improved to .976.
Montreal, which improved to 5-2, now sit tied atop the RSEQ standings with McGill (5-1), which holds a game in hand. The Carabins will play next on Nov. 16 when they host third-place Concordia (3-2-1).
The Martlets -- who lead the league in goals (19) and have the best defensive record with only four goals against -- are off until Nov. 17, when they travel to the nation's capital to confront Carleton (0-5) in a 7 p.m. start.
