OTTAWA --
Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., struck for a pair of post-overtime shootout markers as No. 5 ranked McGill edged the Carleton Ravens 3-2 in RSEQ women's hockey at the Ice House in the nation's capital Saturday night.
The Martlets, who improved to 6-1, remain tied with Montreal (6-2-0) atop the Quebec conference standings. The result was McGill's seventh consecutive win over the Ravens, improving their head-to-head record to 96-4-1 in 101 meetings overall.
After a pair of scoreless five-minute overtime periods, McGill won the shootout session 3-2, connecting on both of their first two shots, taken by
Nicole Howlett and Downie-Landry, who leads the league in scoring with a 2-9-11 record in seven games. The Gee-Gees connected on their second and third shots and McGill replied by sending out Howlett and Downie-Landry again, with the latter hitting paydirt once more.
The game featured a plethora of penalties, with 17 minors, 12 of those were assessed in the first period. McGill, which held an overwhelming 58-17 edge in shots, went 2-for-6 with the man-advantage and killed off all three shorthanded situations. Carleton netminder
Katelyn Steel kicked aside 55 of 57 shots faced in a losing cause as her record fell to 0-6.
"There were a lot of penalties, it is disappointing and that can't happen," said Martlets head coach
Peter Smith, who improved his career record behind the McGill bench to 499-208-33 overall. "That hasn't been us this year, we need to get back to that in our next game and play more disciplined.
"We created a lot of scoring chances but I didn't like our first period, both teams were undisciplined. In the second and the third periods, we generated a lot of offence but we didn't get the puck in the back of the net the way we would have liked too -- they're goalie was very good -- and they were opportunistic on their two goals."
Megan Wilson opened scoring for the Ravens only 10 seconds into the contest and although records are incomplete, it is believed to be the fastest goal ever scored against McGill from the opening faceoff.
Freshman
Valerie Audet from St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., tied the score at 1-1 with her third of the season, on a power-play at 0:49 of the second period.
Nicole Howlett, a psychology senior from Delta, B.C., put McGill ahead 2-1 with her first goal of the season on the power-play at 3:10 of the final stanza. The six-foot forward also capitalized on one of her two shootout opportunities.
But Carleton forward
Katia Boulianne potted the game-tying goal at 9:12 of the final stretch.
Junior
Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., saved 15 of 17 shots for the victory between the pipes, improving to 6-1 on the season. The 5-foot-10 netminder continues to lead the country with a .968 save percentage (.968) in addition to leading the conference in both goals-against average (0.84), and shutouts (3).
McGill will now focus on another first-place showdown with the Montreal Carabins in a a rare Thursday night game on Nov. 22, at McConnell Arena. The teams have split their first two meetings, with McGill winning 3-0 and losing 2-1. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m.
