COTE ST. LUC, Que. --
Emerson Dohm of West Vancouver, B.C., stroked a walk-off-the-field RBI single as McGill rallied with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a dramatic 5-4 victory over the Universite de Montreal at Gary Carter Field, Saturday.
The result earned a doubleheader split for the Redmen to even the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association's best-of-three Northern Division semifinal series at 1-1. The four-time defending national champs can advance to next week's divisional final by winning Sunday's rubber match, slated for 1 p.m. at Parc Ahuntsic.
Trailing 4-1 in their final at bats, three freshmen reached base to ignite the four-run rally.
Michael O'Toole hit a leadoff double to left and advanced to third on a single to right by
Chester Dixon.
Michael Gaudioso then stroked an RBI single to centre, followed by a walk issued to sophomore
Dominic DeFelice, which loaded the bases. The next batter,
Sasha Lagarde, a junior from Pierrefonds, Que., smacked a two-run single to centre, tying the score at 4-4.
Sophomore
Troy Shepherd then advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Junior
Jared Kersh walked to load the bases, setting the stage for Dohm, the designated hitter, who hit the first pitch he saw to cash in DeFelice with the game-winning run. Dohm, a 22-year-old economics senior, went 2-for-4 batting from the clean-up position.
Rocky Hroch started for McGill, surrendering three earned runs on four hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out three, walked three and hit two batters.
Henry Dennis earned the win in relief. He went 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on one hit, striking out two and walking none.
Shawn Beaulieu took the loss for Montreal -- in relief of starter
Alexandre Brunelle -- and went one-third of an inning, allowing one run on two hits, a pair of walks and two hit batters. Brunelle lasted six innings, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out three and walking none.
McGill had an 8-5 edge in hits, and neither team committed and error.
The Redmen will be sending
Thomas Mienkowski to the mound for Sunday's do-or-die game. The imposing 6-foot-3, 205-pound right-hander posted a 2-0 record and a 2.71 earned-run average during the regular season with 16 strikeouts in 10.1 innings. An economics junior from Toronto, he scattered a dozen hits, walked five, and hit three.
