Charlotte Clayton from Newmarket, Ont., scored a game-high 14 points and 
Sirah Diarra of Longueuil, Que., registered a "double-double" as McGill dominated the York Lions 70-45 in the consolation round of the Darcel Wright Memorial Classic women's basketball tournament, Sunday, at the Mattamy Centre, formerly known as Maple Leaf Gardens.
 
The matchup marked the teams first meeting in six years, dating back to a 61-49 Martlets victory on Oct. 14, 2012.
 
McGill held a 17-10 lead after the first quarter and a 31-20 edge at halftime. The Martlets controlled the third quarter 23-6 and the Lions took the fourth 19-16.
 
Clayton, who shot 4-for-8 shooting from the three-point arc, also collected four rebounds and four steals.
Diarra, a 6-foot-1 NCAA transfer from Clemson University, tallied 10 points, 12 rebounds and one steal in 21 minutes of court time. The social work major, shot 5-for-10 from the field and missed her only shot from three-point range.
 
Teammate 
Ruth Tshikudi-Tshila, an education major from Montreal, contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.
 
York guard 
Chante Clarke, of Toronto, scored nine points, six rebounds, a pair of  steals and only missed one of four shots from the free-throw line.
 
McGill shot 34.6 per cent from the floor (27/78), 26.9 from beyond the arc (7/26) and 64.3 from the free-throw line (9/14) compared to the Lions, who shot 27.5 (14/51), drained three of 14 treys and made 14 of 19 attempts from the line.
 
The three-day tourney finishes on Sunday with Bishop's (1-1) versus Saskatchewan (1-1) at 2 p.m for third and Ryerson (2-0) confronts McMaster (2-0) at 7 p.m for the gold medal game.
 
The Martlets, who went 2-6 in preseason play, will now prepare to kick-off the RSEQ regular campaign against UQAM on Thursday, Nov. 8. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Love Competition Hall inside the Currie Gymnasium.
