MONTREAL --
Alex Paquin from Candiac, Que., scored 22 points as McGill defeated Saint Mary's 87-69 in pre-season men's basketball at Love Competition Hall, Sunday.
The matchup marked the teams first meeting in seven years, since a 64-58 Redmen victory on Oct. 15, 2011.
McGill led 26-21 after the opening quarter, 36-31 at halftime and 56-47 after three.
Paquin, a six-foot senior point-guard, also registered five assists and four rebounds for McGill. The applied science major shot 8-for-13 from the floor, including a 4-for-7 performance from downtown, and netted both shots from the free-throw line.
Teammate
Avery Cadogan, a senior from Winnipeg, Man., added 20 points, retrieved eight rebounds and went 8-for-12 from the field.
Noah Daoust from Dorval, Que., tallied 16 points, nine rebounds, three assists and shot 6-for-15 from the floor.
Three Huskies players reached double-digits in points:
Nico Brauner (17),
Nikita Kasongo (16) and
Kemar Alleyne (10).
McGill, which had a 41-31 edge in rebounds, went to the foul-line only five times and came away with four points, compared to Saint Mary's who went 11-for-13 from the line.
The Huskies shot 37.5 per cent from the floor (27/72) and went 4-for-22 from three-point range. McGill shot 47.9 (34/71) and drained 14-of-31 from long range.
McGill improved to 3-7, including a 3-2 record against Canadian opponents. They play next at the University of Maine in a cross-border NCAA pre-season match-up on Oct. 28.
