Marauders master Martlets in college hoops tourney


TORONTO, ONT -- Hilary Hanaka of Hamilton, Ont., scored 18 points as McMaster University defeated McGill 97-73 on the opening night of the Darcel Wright Memorial Classic women's basketball tournament, Friday, at the Mattamy Centre, formerly known as Maple Leaf Gardens.
 
The matchup marked the first meeting since last spring when the Martlets prevailed 55-39 in a U SPORT national quarter-final on Mar., 8, 2018.
 
The Marauders led 23-13 after the opening quarter, 37-25 at halftime and 67-50 after three..
 
Hanaka, a 5-foot-10 geography major, shot 5-for-17 from the floor, including a 3-for-8 effort from three-point range and only missed one of six free-throw attempts. She added six rebounds and one steal in 29 minutes on the court.
 
Four other Marauders reached double-digits in points: Sarah Gates (15), Linnaea Harper (12), Julia Hanaka (11) and Christina Buttenham (10).
 
Martlets rookie Delphine Robitaille, a 5-foot-9 transfer from University of Central Florida, scored a team-high 18 points, on an impressive 6-for-8 performance from the three-point arc. She added three steals, a pair of rebounds and two assists.

Teammate Kamsi Ogbudibe, a sophomore from Calgary, Alb., registered a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. She went 4-for-9 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. Geraldine Cabillo-Abante, a senior who hails from St. Laurent, Que., added 10 points.
 
McGill shot 38.1 per cent from the floor (24/63), 41.4 from beyond the arc (12/29) and 68.4 from the free-throw line (13/19) compared to McMaster, which shot 50.0 (38/76), drained nine of 24 treys and made 12 of 17 attempts from the line.
 
Other opening round games had Ryerson squeaking by Regina 61-60, Bishop's defeating York 73-55 and Saskatchewan dominating Western 76-41.
 
The three-day tourney continues on Saturday with the Regina (0-1) versus York (0-1), followed by a Western (0-1) matchup with McGill (0-1) at 3 p.m.  Ryerson (1-0) will play Bishop's (1-0) at 5 p.m and Saskatchewan (1-0) confronts McMaster (1-0) at 7 p.m.
 
All games of the Darcel Wright Memorial Classic will take place at the Mattamy Centre in Toronto.
