Rookie Robitaille roars in debut, as McGill silences Citadins in volleyball season opener

MONTREAL -- Charlene Robitaille had an impressive rookie debut, scoring 18 points as McGill defeated the UQAM Citadins 3-1 in the RSEQ regular season opener before a boisterous crowd of about 200 at Love Competition Hall, Thursday.  The set scores were 25-14, 18-25, 25-17, 25-21).

UQAM had an 18-12 edge in kills and digs (61-56) but McGill dominated in both service aces (14-5) and stuff blocks (11-3).

Robitaille, a six-foot middle blocker from Mont Saint-Gregoire, Que., had a dozen kills to go along with one ace and five blocks. The science freshman majoring in dietetics was also credited with a pair of digs and an assist.

She was one of three McGill players to reach double digits in scoring, along with Emilie Matte De Grasse (15), a fifth-year senior from Montreal and junior Claire Vercheval (11) of Ste. Julie, Que.

Matte De Grasse, a 5-foot-10 power-hitter, registered 12 kills and three aces in addition to seven digs. Vercheval, a 6-foot-1 power-hitter who returned to action after missing the last two tournaments with a sprained ankle, contributed nine kills, one ace, one block and six digs.

"I was quite pleased with our performance," said Rachele Beliveau, in her 28th season as head coach at McGill. "I think the girls may have been a bit stressed at the beginning but they settled down and seemed to be in control of the match. We played a very good game defensively and we recovered a lot of digs and were able to transition to the attack."

Sophomore setter Andreanne Tremblay of Longueuil, Que., racked up 35 assists, while juniors Lea-Marie Duguay and Rowan Fletcher contributed 15 and 14 digs apiece. Duguay, a third-year libero from Lorraine, Que., achieved a nifty passing ratio of 2.0 out of 3.

The Citadins also had three players in double figures, with Sabrina Mayer collecting 12 points, along with Frederique Nicole (11) and Josiane Aubuchon (10).

McGill (1-0) returns to action on Sunday when they travel to Ottawa to face the Gee-Gees (0-0) in a 2 p.m. matinee. UQAM (0-1) is off until Oct.27 when they play host to Ottawa.
